Leonard Cohen discography [1967-2019]

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC GOQ (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016) was a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist. Cohen published his first book of poetry in Montreal in 1956 and his first novel in 1963. His work often explores religion, isolation, sexuality and interpersonal relationships. Famously reclusive, having once spent several years in a Zen Buddhist monastery, and possessing a persona frequently associated with mystique, he is extremely well-regarded by critics for his literary accomplishments, for the richness of his lyrics, and for producing an output of work of high artistic quality over a five-decade career.

Musically, Cohen's earliest songs (many of which appeared on the 1967 album, Songs of Leonard Cohen) were rooted in European folk music. In the 1970s, his material encompassed pop, cabaret and world music. Since the 1980s, his high baritone voice has evolved into lower registers (bass baritone and bass), with accompaniment from a wide variety of instruments and female backup singers.

Over 2,000 renditions of Cohen's songs have been recorded. Cohen has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. While giving the speech at Cohen's induction into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters.

Cohen died on November 7, 2016 at the age of 82 at his home in Los Angeles; cancer was a contributing cause.

Harry Nilsson - Rare Harry in 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's (4 CD)

Although he synthesized disparate elements of both rock and pop traditions, singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson was at heart a maverick whose allegiance belonged to neither. He's best-known for his versions of other people's songs (Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," Badfinger's "Without You," an entire album of Randy Newman songs), but he was a skilled composer and is recognized as a pop craftsman of the first order. His initial series of albums in the late '60s made him a personal favorite of the Beatles, who found a natural affinity with his knack for catchy melodies, witty lyrics, and extraordinary vocal range. Nilsson lost some of his original audience, however, with subsequent detours into pre-rock styles of pop, and did little recording over the last 15 years of his life.

VA - The Old Grey Whistle Test - Blues (2011/FLAC)

2011 collection featuring tracks from Muddy Waters, Fleetwood Mac, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Little Feat. The Old Grey Whistle Test has now been synonymous with quality music for 40 years. Although possibly best know as a show for Rock music, the show maintained an amazing variety when it came to choosing its artists, it really only had two criteria, 1, that the artists had released an album and 2 that they produced great music. This collection mostly features artists that appeared on the show but also include artists who for whatever reason didn't or couldn't appear on the show.

Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe - In Chronological Order (4 CD, 1991/FLAC)

Recording as Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie at their 1929 debut recording session the couple cut six numbers, three featuring Kansas Joe as a vocalist, two with Minnie taking the vocals and the third found them duetting. These recordings weren’t afforded immediate issue but were released over a period of time. For example, the coupling Bumble Bee / I Want That was not on sale until some fifteen months later. It was to be the suggestive Bumble Bee (“Got the best stinger I’ve ever seen”) that was to make Memphis Minnie. So successful was the song that Victor “borrowed” Minnie to record a version fronting a caucus of the Memphis Jug Band. Vocalion then responded with Bumble Bee No. 2 and New Bumble Bee. The song was such hot property on the race market that in the last six months of 1930, unreleased recordings apart, there were no fewer than five versions, on three different labels, of Bumble Bee  three of which are present on this compilation. The sheer drive of the two guitars, the strength of imagery and intuitive awareness of one another’s musical needs made for a perfect team. Take a song like, When The Levee Breaks, that lyrically mirrors the harsh realities of living near the artificial river banks with lines like, “If it keep on raining, levee’s gonna break an’ all these people have no place to stay” whilst the twin guitar rhythms help create a complete fusion of feeling. On less intense, more hokum based numbers like She Wouldn’t Give Me None or Can I Do It For You a variant on the “Mama Let Me Lay It On You” theme) the duo display astonishing empathy in their guitar playing, most notably by Minnie. To quote guitarist Woody Mann on her technique “she seemed to be able to pick sounds from all around Memphis and integrate them into her playing”. As main vocalist Memphis Minnie can be heard on Mister Tango Blues and I’m Talking About You and give good insight into her ability to modulate her voice to suit the mood of the lyric. Whether it be slow meaningful blues or up-tempo lighter material she judiciously croaks, moans, twists and cracks her voice to achieve a fine sense of the dramatic.

Tom And Jerry - Complete Recordings Vol. 1 & 2 [Simon & Garfunkel early recordings] (2 CD/FLAC)

Tom And Jerry. Complete Recordings Vol. 1 and 2 are compilation albums by Simon & Garfunkel. These albums contains songs in their early career, where they were known as Tom & Jerry.

Simon's first song written for himself and Garfunkel, when he was 12 or 13, was called "The Girl for Me," and according to Simon became the "neighborhood hit." His father wrote out the words and chords on paper by hand for the boys to use. That paper became the first officially copyrighted Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel song, and is now in the Library of Congress. In 1957, still in their mid-teens, they recorded the song "Hey, Schoolgirl" under the name Tom and Jerry, given to them by their label Big Records. The single reached No. 49 on the pop charts.

After graduating from high school, Simon majored in English at Queens College, while Garfunkel studied mathematics at Columbia University in Manhattan. Simon was a brother in the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, earned a degree in English literature, and briefly attended Brooklyn Law School after graduation, but his real passion was rock and roll.

Between 1957 and 1964, Simon wrote, recorded, and released more than 30 songs, occasionally reuniting with Garfunkel as Tom & Jerry for some singles, including "Our Song" and "That's My Story". Most of the songs Simon recorded during that time were performed alone or with musicians other than Garfunkel. They were released on several minor record labels, such as Amy, Big, Hunt, King, Tribute, and Madison. He used several pseudonyms for these recordings, including Jerry Landis, Paul Kane and True Taylor. Simon enjoyed some moderate success in recording a few singles as part of a group called Tico and the Triumphs, including a song called "Motorcycle" which reached No. 97 on the Billboard charts in 1962. Tico and the Triumphs released four 45s. Marty Cooper, known as Tico, sang lead on several of these releases. A childhood friend, Bobby Susser, children's songwriter, record producer, and performer, co-produced the Tico 45s with Simon. That year, Simon reached No. 99 on the pop charts as Jerry Landis with the hit "The Lone Teen Ranger." Both chart singles were released on Amy Records.

VA — Anthology of World Music: North Indian Classical Music (4 CD, 1998/FLAC)

The box set Anthology of World Music: North Indian Classical Music consists of all four volumes in the North Indian Classical Music series on Rounder (originally on Barenreiter Musicaphon), previously issued as separate discs. Included is an extensive and informative booklet of the combined original liner notes, which overviews the different instruments and performers, brief individual track descriptions, and more, resulting in a box set that is not only an interesting and varied listen, but also very educational, making it a great place to start for listeners interested in checking out North Indian classical music. Despite the daunting task of representing this musical tradition in a mere four discs, the collection does a good job with the space that it has.

Disc one focuses on vocal music and contains sections of the Raga Ahir Bhairava, the Raga Sujani Malhar, and Raga Bhairavi, with featured singers: brothers Zahiruddin and Faiyazuddin Dagar (on two tracks), Yunus Hussain Khan, and Dipali Nag. The vocal music theme continues into the first two ragas of the second disc, with singers Lakshmi Shankar and Siddheshwari Devi, followed by two selections featuring vina (once dubbed the "stick zither") and sarangi (India's main bowed string instrument) musicians Sabri Khan and Asad Ali Khan, respectively. The string instruments are not solo, however, but accompanied by tabla and pakhavaj. There is a short pakhavaj solo piece, followed by two tabla solos that close the second volume of North Indian Classical Music. Part three focuses on string instruments and features Arvind Parikh on sitar during Raga Marva, followed by surashringar (an eight-string, picked instrument) player Sulalit Sinha and surbahar (large sitar) player Manfred Junius showcased during Raga Miyanki Malhar. The closing piece on this volume features Gopal Krishna on the vichitra vina (a fretless vina). The final disc is split between string and wind instruments, with featured musicians Ashok Roy on sarod, Om Prakash Sharma on dilruba (a more modern bowed instrument), flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, and shahnai (Indian oboe) players Kali Charan and Hiralal.

Among McClennan's most notable numbers were "Bottle It Up and Go," "Cross Cut Saw," "Travelin' Highway Man," and "New Highway No. 51 Blues." ZZ Top discography [1971-2014]

Known to the world as "That Lil' Ol' Band from Texas," ZZ Top were had a thoroughly unique career. They started as a trio putting their own spin on blues & boogie rock, and became arena rock stars in the 1970s. In the 1980s, they cannily reinvented themselves, hot-wiring their sound with sequencers and synthesizers and becoming unlikely MTV heroes with a series of clever videos that turned bearded frontmen Billy Gibbons (guitar) and Dusty Hill (bass) into an eccentric visual signature. This gambit made them one of the only groups of their era to not only survive in the new arena of pop, but to become more popular than ever, gaining a new audience without sacrificing the old one. At their core, ZZ Top's songs never changed that much, taking standard blues figures, filtering them through Gibbons' precisely raunchy guitar, marrying them to the simple but funky groove of Hill and drummer Frank Beard, and adding lyrics steeped in surreal wit as they dealt with sex, booze, the blues, and the glorious idiosyncrasies of life in Texas. Their stardom faded a bit in the mid-'90s as their albums stopped topping the charts, but they remained a popular live act that could reliably fill large venues and give fans a great show more than 50 years after the act debuted. 1973's Tres Hombres was their first major success and the point where their trademark sound found itself, 1983's Eliminator introduced the streamlined, new wave-influenced approach that brought them their greatest success, and 2012's La Futura, the final studio album from the original trio, was a return to form that delivered Lone Star guitar raunch with flashes of electronic sheen.

In October 2017, the band canceled a number of shows when Dusty Hill developed health problems and his doctors insisted he take a break. They were back at work in 2018, and in 2019 they were booked to play an eight-night residency at the Venetian Theater in Las Vegas, the same year a feature-length documentary about the group, That Little Ol' Band from Texas, debuted on Netflix. The Covid-19 pandemic shut down the Las Vegas residency after a few shows and kept ZZ Top off the road throughout 2020, but they planned an extensive tour beginning in July 2021 and extending well into 2022. Four dates into the tour, Dusty Hill dropped out after his health issues once again made it necessary for him to return home. On July 23, the trio played their first show without Hill since 1970, with their guitar tech, Elwood Francis, taking over on bass with Hill's blessings. On July 28, 2021, Dusty Hill died at his home in Houston, Texas at the age of 72. Shortly after Hill's passing was revealed to the media, Billy Gibbons released a statement saying Hill insisted the band go on in the event of his death, and that Francis would continue to hold down the bass for the trio.

Saxon was one of the early leaders of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, alongside Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, even outdistancing them at the onset. Emerging in 1977, the band found commercial success with the release of their seminal sophomore effort, 1980's Wheels of Steel, which went platinum in the UK. Subsequent efforts Strong Arm of the Law (1980), Denim and Leather (1981), and Power & the Glory also did well at home, with the latter outing cracking the Billboard 200, but a series of bad decisions and bad breaks, as well as internal strife, severely stunted the band's momentum toward the end of the '80s. Still, Saxon persevered, recording and performing consistently into the 21st century, and ultimately attaining respectability from the heavy metal community, particularly in mainland Europe.

Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee - Cripple Creek (2 CD, 2009/FLAC)

Four original Folkways 10" LPs complete, plus 9 bonus cuts.

This set collects four albums released on the Folkways label from the 1950's, plus nine tracks from the 1940's. Two of the albums ("Get On Board"--1952 and "Washboard Band-Country Dance Music"--1956) feature both Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, while the remaining two ("Sonny Terry's Washboard Band"--1955 and "Brownie McGhee's Blues"--1955) are solo albums from both artists respectively.

This relatively early music is a combination of folk (listen to Pete Seeger's banjo) and blues styles in the "Carolina" (Piedmont) style. Even though these are post-war recordings, they hark back to an earlier era of country blues with strains of folk music--thanks to Seeger's fine, sensitive playing. These are some of the earlier examples of both Terry's and McGhee's duo and individual styles. Fans of both these performers who want to hear early examples of their style of blues singing /harp playing/guitar style will want to hear these sides.

  • Sonny Terry  Harmonica, Trombone, Vocals, Washboard, Washtub Bass
  • Brownie McGhee  Guitar, Vocals
  • William Edward Cook Washboard
  • Coyall McMahan Maracas
  • Frank Robertson Guitar (Bass)
  • Pete Seeger 5-string Banjo, Engineering Supervisor

Jimmy Page: Session Man is a two-volume compilation album featuring tracks by various artists on which Jimmy Page performed as a session musician, recorded between 1963 and 1968. The album was released by AIP Records (a subsidiary of Bomp! Records) in 1989 (first volume) and the second was released in 1990. Some of the tracks were mastered from vinyl due to the rare nature of the recordings.

The artwork and title are similar to a bootleg compilation released by Slipped Disc Records in 1979, titled James Patrick Page: Session Man.

The Animals - The Complete (1964-1967) [11 CD, 2003/FLAC]

The Animals were an English music group of the 1960s formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during the early part of the decade, and later relocated to London. Known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon – as exemplified by their number one signature song "The House of the Rising Sun" as well as by hits such as "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" and "It's My Life" – the band balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-oriented album material. They became known in the United States as part of the British Invasion.

The Animals underwent numerous personnel changes in the mid-1960s and suffered from poor business management. Under the name Eric Burdon and the Animals, they moved to California and achieved commercial success as a psychedelic rock band, before disbanding at the end of the decade. Altogether, the group had ten Top Twenty hits in both the UK and US.

The original lineup had a brief comeback in 1977 and 1983. There have been several partial regroupings of the original era members since then under various names.
