Although his name may not be as instantly recognizable stateside as Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin, Alexis Korner played an enormously large role in helping launch the British blues explosion of the '60s. After all, such soon-to-be household names as Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ginger Baker, and Robert Plant either recorded with Korner, or credit the singer/guitarist as an early inspiration to follow their blues calling. The double-disc. 40-plus-track Kornerstoned: The Anthology 1954-1983 chronicles Korner's entire recording career, from Alexis Korner Skiffle Group in the early '50s, to fronting various bands later in the '50s and throughout the '60s (as Alex Korner's Blues Incorporated, Alex Korner's Blues All Stars, etc.), all of which are included here. Individual standouts include the recently unearthed "Steal Away," which features a 20-year-old Robert Plant (evidence that he had his whole "shrieking sex god" thing down -- even pre-Zeppelin), as well as a laid-back yet funky cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Mighty-Mighty Spade & Whitey" (credited to New Church), which features Free's then-lead singer Paul Rodgers on vocals. Also included is a mostly instrumental cover of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (which long served as the theme music for the popular British TV show Top of the Pops), as well as another laid-back funk-rock cover, "The Gambler." Kornerstoned: The Anthology 1954-1983 is a fitting testament to one of rock's most oft-overlooked yet important figures.

Eric Clapton- Slowhand [35th Anniversary Super Deluxe, 3 CD, 2012/FLAC]
The album includes of two of Clapton’s best known songs Wonderful Tonight, and the cover of J.J. Cale’s Cocaine.
The Super Deluxe box set includes three previously unreleased session outtakes (four in total) and two CDs are devoted to presenting the complete 14-track performance of the Hammersmith Odeon concert on 27 April 1977.
The record has been remastered from the original Olympic Studios 1/4″ flat analog master tapes and the session tracks and live performances are newly mixed from the original two-inch analogue tapes. This all sounds very promising from a sound perspective.

VA - Zydeco - Essential Collection [2003/FLAC]
Like Cajun music, the dominant instrument is the accordion, but unlike Cajun music, zydeco adds electric bass, horns, and sometimes keyboards. In a nutshell, zydeco is Creole (black) dance music of southwest Louisiana, blending Cajun music with rhythm & blues and soul. The word "zydeco" is actually a bastardization of an early zydeco song, "L'Haricots Sont Pas Sals" (The Snap Beans Aren't Salted). The first black-French recordings were made in 1928 by Amad Ardoin, an accordion player who played in the Cajun style. However, zydeco didn't begin to evolve -- at least on record -- until the mid-'50s, when Clifton Chenier and Boozoo Chavis made their initial recordings. Like Cajun music, zydeco didn't achieve national popularity until the 1980s, buoyed somewhat by Rockin' Sidney's surprise hit "My Toot Toot." By the '90s, several zydeco artists were signed to major labels, including Terrance Simien, Boozoo Chavis, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Rockin' Dopsie.
Buddy Guy - Can't Quit the Blues [ 3 CD, 2006/FLAC]
Legend status came late to Buddy Guy so it shouldn't be surprising that this is the first box set devoted to the blues giant's work. Yet it is still a bit of a shock, because Guy it seems, has always been a part of the modern blues scene, ubiquitous even in the late 60's at the era's high-profile rock and folk festivals, playing the hippie ballrooms alongside the major rockers of the day.
VA - The Blue Horizon Story 1965-1970 Vol. 1 (3 CD, 1997) [FLAC]
While Blue Horizon gained its reputation as the home of great British blues (early Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, and others), its spiritual home was in America, and it released far more American artists than most people realize, beginning with its first disc, 99 copies (for tax reasons) of a Hubert Sumlin single. And that largely set the tone for the first five years of the label admirably covered in this three-CD set.
Label head Mike Vernon was a blues lover and he released the music he loved, often licensing a track and sometimes signing and developing artists, as he did with his British stable, most especially Fleetwood Mac, born after Green left employer John Mayall (who also released two cuts on Blue Horizon, both with another former blues-breaker, Eric Clapton, and both, thankfully, here). Mac hit the big time with "Albatross," which definitely wasn't a blues, but their Chicago-influenced grit is apparent elsewhere, especially on "Temperature Is Rising (98.8F)," recorded with the legendary Otis Spann in the Windy City. But the label could easily move from the raw Delta sound of Bukka White to the electrifying slide of Hound Dog Taylor without it seeming unreasonable, while bringing on British artists like Duster Bennett, Jo Ann Kelly, and T.S. McPhee (who'd go on to head the Groundhogs) along the way.

Nicky Hopkins, Ry Cooder, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts - Jamming With Edward [1961,FLAC]
Jamming with Edward! is an album recorded by three members of The Rolling Stones with Nicky Hopkins and Ry Cooder at London's Olympic Studio during the Let It Bleed sessions of 1969, and released on Rolling Stones Records in 1972. Keith Richards had stormed out of the sessions for a few days in protest of producer Jimmy Miller's decision to bring Cooder in to beef up the guitars as Dave Mason did during the Beggars Banquet sessions.
On the strength of The Rolling Stones' association with the album, Jamming With Edward! reached #33 on the U.S charts, although it failed to reach the UK listings.
The eponymous Edward was pianist Nicky Hopkins, as in Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder, Hopkins' star turn on Quicksilver Messenger Service's album Shady Grove.
- Ry Cooder – guitar
- Mick Jagger – harmonica, vocals
- Charlie Watts – drums
- Nicky Hopkins – keyboards, piano
- Bill Wyman – bass guitar
Groundhogs - Thank Christ For Groundhogs: The Liberty Years 1968-1972 [3 CD, 2010/FLAC]
2010 three CD set that contains their first five albums for Liberty Records (1968-72) plus bonus tracks. With a career that spans an impressive five decades, the Groundhogs are a veritable British Blues-Rock institution. With a line-up cemented around Peter Cruickshank on bass guitar, Ken Pustelnik on drums and fronted by singer, guitarist and principle songwriter Tony (T.S.) McPhee, this bluesy power trio were joined by harmonica toting Steve Rye for their full length debut, Scratching The Surface released on Liberty Records in 1968. With a reputation hard won by their incessant touring schedule, the band recorded Blues Obituary as a three piece in 1969, followed by Thanks Christ For The Bomb (1970), then hitting #5 with their most successful record, Split, in 1971 and rounded off by the fabulously titled Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs (1972).
VA - Deep River of Song (The Alan Lomax Collection) [10 CD, 1999-2004]
Alan Lomax remains an enigmatic figure in the history of American roots music. Few can but be in awe of the amazing legacy of field recordings that he made in America and around the world. Rounder Records is in the midst of an amazing project with the Alan Lomax Archive to release 150 volumes of his field recordings in their Alan Lomax Collection. Already dozens have been released in various series. Of special interest is the Deep River of Song series which focuses on African American field recordings from 1933 to 1946. The latest two are stunning, Deep River of Song: Georgia (Rounder) and Deep River of Song: Alabama (Rounder) The four CD collection, Sounds of the South (Atlantic) from Lomax's 1959 trips through that region is another great sampler of his work. Alan Lomax also produced a five part PBS Television series American Patchwork, that over a decade ago looked at Delta Blues, Cajun music, jazz parades in New Orleans, Appalachian old time music and the contribution of elder songsters to roots music that is now available on video from Vestapol.
