Elvis Presley - The Complete '70s Albums Collection (21 CD, 2015) [24-96]

Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th century popular music. Not necessarily the best, and certainly not the most consistent. But no one could argue with the fact that he was the musician most responsible for popularizing rock & roll on an international level. Viewed in cold sales figures, his impact was phenomenal. Dozens upon dozens of international smashes from the mid-’50s to the mid-’70s, as well as the steady sales of his catalog and reissues since his death in 1977, may make him the single highest-selling performer in history.

Sony are to release a new Elvis Presley box set called Elvis On Tour. This 6CD+blu-ray package follows The King on his 1972 North American tour and includes audio from four of the shows, two rehearsals and the concert film on blu-ray.

The first three CDs in this set feature performances from 9th, 10th and 14th April 1972 respectively; that’s Hampton Roads Coliseum, Virginia; Richmond Coliseum, Virginia; and Greensboro Coliseum, North Carolina. All three are previously unreleased. The fourth CD features the 18th April gig at the Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas, and includes material that was part of 2003’s Elvis: Close-Up box set, however it has been newly remixed for this release.

Tour rehearsals constitute CDs five and six. CD 5 has audio recorded live at RCA Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, on 30th and 31st March 1972. This is mostly unreleased, although some were issued on a couple of the specialist ‘Follow That Dream’ releases in 2001 and 2004 (Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals and Sunset Boulevard, respectively).

CD 6 is all completely unreleased and offers more of the 31 March rehearsals at RCA and includes unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson’s ‘For The Good Times’. In total, this Elvis On Tour box set features a total of 145 audio tracks, 91 of which are previously unreleased.

Elvis Presley - From Nashville to Memphis: The Essential '60s Masters [5 CD, 1993/FLAC]

From Nashville to Memphis: The Essential '60s Masters is a box set five-disc compilation of studio master recordings by Elvis Presley during the decade of the 1960s, released in 1993 on RCA Records, catalogue number 66160-2. In its initial format as a long box issue, it included a set of collectable stamps duplicating the record jackets from every release LP, and those from the singles pertinent to this box set, on RCA Records.

The box comprises every master recording made by Presley during the decade and released in his lifetime, with the exception of those made at sessions for movie soundtracks or for television broadcasts, with one exception in the latter case. The set also excludes Presely's gospel recordings and live performances, but does include songs that had been recorded at non-soundtrack sessions, but which were released on soundtrack albums in order to bring the album running-time to an acceptable length, such as the sessions of May 26 and May 27, 1963. As a result of these criteria, only two of Presely's 1960s original albums are represented in their entirety in the set: Elvis Is Back! and From Elvis in Memphis; all other Presley albums of the decade, with the exception of two gospel albums, included at least one film-derived recording, or in the case of From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis, live recordings.

The King of Rock 'n' Roll: The Complete 50s Masters

In its initial format as a long box issue, it included a set of collectable stamps duplicating the record jackets from every LP, every single that had a picture sleeve, and most of the EP releases, on RCA Records.

Elvis Presley - Young Man with the Big Beat: The Complete '56 Elvis Presley Masters (4 CD, 1996/FLAC)

In 1996, RCA released Elvis 56, a single-disc compilation of 21 masters and one alternate take Presley recorded during 1956, the year he became a phenomenon. Fifteen years later, RCA/Legacy bested that set with Young Man with the Beat: The Complete ’56 Elvis Presley Masters, a deluxe five-disc box encompassing two discs of studio recordings, a disc of live recordings, a disc of outtakes, and a disc of interviews. Arriving just a few years after quintuple-disc box The King of Rock & Roll: The Complete ‘50s Masters, the 1996 disc almost seemed unnecessary, as it covered the same ground only not as thoroughly, and Young Man with the Big Beat doesn’t quite escape that criticism, either, as it appears just a year after the gargantuan Complete Elvis Presley Masters box, but the intent of the two boxes is wildly different.
