Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter & James Cotton - King Biscuit Flower Hour 1977 (Live) (2022) [FLAC]

Steve Paul of Blue Sky Records, appeared as a saviour to both Johnny Winter and blues giant Muddy Waters, at a time when both musicians were facing hard times.

The result of his investment soon paid off, with the Hard Again tour combining the respected powerhouse of Waters and Winter joined by James Cotton, culminating in a further four albums being produced. Although this particular collaboration was short-lived, it has provided blues fans a rare opportunity to indulge in the work of two hugely important musical figures whose respect for each other is evidently unflinching.

Two live albums, Muddy Mississippi Waters Live and the more recent Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down have allowed a glimpse of the concerts from 1977-1978.

Keyhole proudly presents the entire King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast of Waters, Winter and Cotton, live from New York's Palladium on March 4th 1977 fully remastered with in-depth liners and rare photos.

Muddy Waters - Early Morning Blues (2 CD, 2015)

This quintessential 2-CD collector’s edition contains 55 remastered studio tracks, including all of the fabulous early singles – both A- & B-sides (except for “Sugar Sweet”) – Muddy Waters made (accompanied by such masters as Little Walter, Junior Wells, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, and Otis Spann) for the Aristocrat and Chess Records labels, between 1947 and 1955. Waters’ early repertoire, much of which is presented on this indispensable double-set, marks one of the most important building blocks of the Chicago electric blues style.

Muddy Waters - The Complete Aristocrat & Chess Singles As & Bs 1947-62 [4 CD, 2014]

Muddy Waters brought a Son House-like Delta country-blues style north with him from Mississippi to Chicago in 1943, intent on making a living from music. Switching from acoustic to electric guitar in order to be better heard in the Chicago clubs and bars, Waters gradually assembled one of the greatest ongoing bands in the history of blues, and in the process, Waters and his band assembled the very template for classic Chicago blues. Waters first cut a track for the Chess Brothers in 1947, who released it on their Aristocrat Records imprint, and for the next two decades or so, Waters turned out the basic iconic catalog of electric Chicago blues for various Chess imprints, and those singles, both A- and B-sides, are collected here in this four-disc, 98-track set. Waters was an astute bandleader, and musicians like Little Walter, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Willie Dixon, and Otis Spann all contributed heavily to these sides, which sit at the very heart of Chicago blues, and signal the very point where the blues became modern and urban.

VA - The Road To Robert Johnson And Beyond [4 CD, 2007]

During the last quarter of the 20th century, and thanks largely to Eric Clapton's remarkable devotion to his memory, Robert Leroy Johnson posthumously became the most celebrated Delta blues musician of the pre-WWII era. Among numerous editions of his complete works and various anthologies that combine his recordings with those of his contemporaries and followers, J.S.P.'s The Road to Robert Johnson and Beyond combines many of his essential performances with those by dozens of other blues artists from Blind Lemon Jefferson and Henry Thomas to Muddy Waters and Elmore James. 105 tracks fill four CDs with several decades' worth of strongly steeped blues that trace the African American migration from the deep south on up into Chicago. This is a fine way to savor the recorded evidence, as primary examples from Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Son House, Charlie McCoy, Walter Vincson, Skip James, Ma Rainey, Tampa Red, Kokomo Arnold, Scrapper Blackwell, Leroy Carr, Lonnie Johnson, and Peetie Wheatstraw lead directly to early modern masters like Big Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Bill Broonzy, Johnny Temple, Leroy Foster, Johnny Shines, Homesick James Williamson, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Snooky Pryor, Little Walter, and David Honeyboy Edwards, among many others. This collection would be greatly enhanced by Edward Komara's The Road to Robert Johnson: The Genesis and Evolution of Blues in the Delta from the Late 1800s Through 1938, a highly regarded work of musicological scholarship published at the same time as J.S.P. released their similarly titled box set in 2007. Careful remastering and affordable pricing make this hefty stash of classic blues an excellent option for anyone who cares at all about where the music came from and how it evolved.
