VA - Newport Folk Festival 1960 (2 LP) [24-96]

Newport Folk Festival is an annual American folk-oriented music festival in Newport, Rhode Island, which began in 1959 as a counterpart to the Newport Jazz Festival. It was one of the first modern music festivals in America, and remains a focal point in the expanding genre of folk music. The festival was held annually from 1959 to 1969, except in 1961 and 1962, returned to Newport in 1985, and has been held at Fort Adams State Park since then.

John Lee Hooker - The Healer (1989) [24-192]

The Healer
was a major comeback for John Lee Hooker. Featuring a wide array of guest stars, including Bonnie Raitt, Johnnie Johnson, and Los Lobos, The Healer captured widespread media attention because of all the superstar musicians involved in its production. Unfortunately, that long guest list is what makes the album a fairly unengaging listen. Certainly there are moments were it clicks, but that's usually when the music doesn't greatly expand on his stripped-down boogie.
John Lee Hooker was 73 years old when the album was released. It was his first Grammy win and was the album that had placed highest on the Billboard charts in his forty-year career. The album had such success that it "permitted John Lee Hooker to live out the end of his life in comfort". Powers recounts with joy sending a large royalty check to Hooker, and the deep gratitude he felt for the opportunity to help him to finally achieve the recognition he deserved.

John Lee Hooker - Blues Is The Healer [10 CD, 2009 / FLAC]

Blues Is the Healer is a ten-CD box set of 149 songs from the early years of blues legend John Lee Hooker's repertory, released in 2005 by the German label Membran. According to one reviewer, "the first 8 discs are early solo Hooker with the occasional backing guitar or piano. Disc 9 sounds like Veejay recordings and the 10th is a live concert".

John Lee Hooker - Early Recordings: Detroit and Beyond Vol. 1 & 2 (4 LP, 2018) [24-96]

Third Man is ecstatic to present the first re-issue of John Lee Hooker's seminal and rare Detroit and Beyond recordings on vinyl since their initial release in 1973. These tracks have been heralded by many fans as his best overall collection of recordings as well as his some of his earliest, apart from the 6 recorded by Bernie in 1961. Split between two double-LP volumes and remastered using original master recordings from Detroit's legendary United Sound Systems (not even 2 miles from Third Man Detroit!), these collections are a must for blues and music lovers.

John Lee Hooker - Hooker [4 CD, 2006]

John Lee Hooker, master bluesman and undisputed father of boogie, recorded for more than 30 labels over a span of 50 years. Amazingly, he has never had a definitive career box set, until now. Hooker is an 84-track, 4CD set that culls material from all eras of his lengthy career, produced in conjunction with his estate to serve as the definitive tribute to his legacy. Includes collaborations with Canned Heat, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison, Ry Cooder, Charles Brown, Los Lobos, Eric Clapton to name a few.

John Lee Hooker - The Classic Early Years 1948-1951 [4 CD, 2002 ]

This four-disc box from London's JSP Records collects an astounding 100 songs recorded by John Lee Hooker in Detroit from the years 1948 to 1952, including his first two sides ever, the signature tunes "Boogie Chillen" and "Sally Mae." Most of the tracks here are done solo, with Hooker's ever-present foot-stomping, although a few feature other musicians on loose-limbed blues boogies. Since Hooker never significantly altered his style during his long career, these first recordings set the stage for all that came after, and he arguably never sounded fresher or better. Four discs worth of this throwback Mississippi bluesman will be severe overkill for casual listeners, but diehard Hooker fans will find this box set absolutely essential.
