John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band (The Ultimate Collection, 8 CD, 2021) [FLAC + 24/192]

“Plastic Ono Band,” released in December 1970, was John Lennon’s first solo album after the breakup of the Beatles earlier that year. It was a far cry from the tuneful reassurance of Paul McCartney’s one-man-studio-band album “McCartney” and the polished abundance of George Harrison’s triple album, “All Things Must Pass,” both of which were also released that year. In both music and lyrics, “Plastic Ono Band” was a stark statement of pain, separation, vulnerability and self-reclamation after the whirlwind that had been Lennon’s life as a Beatle. Half a century later, the album retains its power.

Now it has been remixed, massively expanded, anatomized and annotated as “Plastic Ono Band: The Ultimate Collection”. The compilation was produced by Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow and a producer (with Lennon and Phil Spector) of the original album, and Simon Hilton; there are other configurations for less obsessive fans.

It was initially intended as a creative outlet for the Beatles, both as a group and individually, plus a selection of other artists including Mary Hopkin, James Taylor, Badfinger, and Billy Preston. In practice, the roster had become dominated by the mid-1970s with releases of the former Beatles as solo artists. The Rolling Stones - Rock and Roll Circus 1968 (DVDRIP + FLAC-HD [2019]

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is a film released in 1996 of a December 11, 1968 event put together by The Rolling Stones. The event comprised two concerts on a circus stage, and included acts such as Eric Clapton, The Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and Jethro Tull. John Lennon and his fiancee Yoko Ono performed as part of a supergroup called The Dirty Mac, along with Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Richards. It was originally meant to be aired on the BBC, but the Rolling Stones withheld its airing and release.

This concert is the only footage of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi performing as a member of Jethro Tull; he was a member for only several weeks.

Originally filmed in December 1968, "The Rock and Roll Circus" was originally intended to be released as a television special. The special was filmed over two nights and featured not only the Rolling Stones but The Who, Jethro Tull (with future Black Sabbath guitarist Tommy Iommi filling in for the recently departed Mick Abrahams), Marianne Faithful and an all-star jam featuring John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Micthell. Sadly, this also marked the final appearance of the Stones founder and original guiding light, Brian Jones, who would be dead within six months after filming the special.

John Lennon - Between The Lines - Complete Home Recordings 1975-1980 (9 CD, 2008)

Probably one of the best examples of a fan-collected set is John Lennon: Between the Lines: Complete Home Recordings 1975-1980. The collection brings together all of Lennon's available demos from the period, using all relevant books, bootlegs, official releases, and even 'Lost Lennon Tapes' tape logs to uncover not only what was recorded, but in what order. It is a painstaking effort, and all of the recordings have been transcribed. The set reveals that Lennon did not stop writing in 1975, but rather worked slowly, tossed aside many compositions, and worked on several others that eventually formed the basis for Double Fantasy and the posthumous Milk and Honey.

This set includes all surfaced Lennon home recordings from the 1975-80 period. All of the audio has been carefully remastered and speed corrected from the best available sources, and the tracks have been presented in the order of recording (as far as could be ascertained) -- something which hasn't been attempted previously. For several of the demos, the actual taping order and context of the various versions is revealed for the first time.

The original vinyl version of this material was also released in 1988 by Bag Records. The newer release took each of the original albums and spread them between 22 discs, with two to three of the original records on each two-disc set.
