Notes
The back cover of this set includes the following text about the source of the recording;
The soundboard tapes from which this CD package originated were created under far less than ideal, and in certain senses downright intimidating, circumstances. Aside from their main purpose - presenting a gloriously abundant slice of the Jerry Garcia Band's legendary 13 Magical Nights On Broadway - the recordings contained herein also clearly prove the worth of courage, hard work and modern science. Rest assured, as you enjoy this music, it hasn't sounded nearly this good since performed live.

Pure Jerry #5

The four-disc Jerry Garcia Band: Merriweather Post Pavilion, September 1 & 2, 1989 adds to the canon with two complete sets performed on a rare non-California tour that encompassed twelve dates in the east and Midwest. Jerry is exceptionally lively and gregarious, and keyboardist Melvyn Seals shines throughout the pair of Columbia, Maryland dates, with Discs One and Two capturing 9/1 and Three and Four handling 9/2. It all opens with “How Sweet It Is”—a sentiment that could aptly title the entire set—and closes with a version of “Deal” featuring epic leads. Nuances within the songs, such as the rhythm guitar passages on “Stop That Train,” are also memorable, and “Lucky Old Sun” is a take to write home about. The first set from 9/2 is another dazzler, with renditions of “I’ll Take A Melody” and “They Love Each Other,” and the second set boasts two gems Garcia first released during his Broadway stint—Dylan’s “Forever Young” and Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me.” The entire compilation closes with the band’s ultimate jamming vehicle, “Don’t Let Go,” and this long-standing JGB line-up has rarely sounded better.

Pure Jerry #8The next in Pure Jerry series offers the first official full release of acoustic music from Jerry Garcia and John Kahn. Garcia and Kahn deliver a solid performance with a nice blend of old folk songs, a Dylan tune and Hunter-Garcia classics.

This line from the back cover sums it all up nicely, "Aside from its main purpose - celebrating Jerry Garcia's and John Kahn's wonderfully sweet performance of February 28, 1986 - this recording clearly proves the value of vision, hard work and modern science. Enjoy it with our best wishes and in good health."
