Bruce Springsteen - The Lost Masters & The Lost Masters Essential Collection [19+4 CD, 2003]

In the spring of 1996, word quickly spread of a 19-CD set called "The Lost Masters" consisting of studio outtakes, home demos, and rehearsal sessions from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band from the years 1977-1983. In addition to the 19 discs, two "Best of" sets would also be released and would include bonus tracks not found elsewhere in the set.The discs were to be released individually in groups of five or so and the first five surfaced in early summer.

The CDs can basically be broken down into 5 segments: Darkness outtakes , River outtakes , home demos , rehearsal sessions and Hollywood Hills garage tapes .

Rounding out the set are the complete Nebraska sessions, Born in the USA outtakes, and "Big Expendables", which consists of studio outtakes from The River, home demos, and rehearsal sessions.

Soft Machine - Bundles (Remastered And Expanded Edition, 2022, 2 CD) [FLAC]

A remastered 2CD edition of the 1975 album Bundles by the celebrated Jazz / Progressive group Soft Machine. The album was the band’s first for EMI’s Harvest and featured a line-up of Mike Ratledge (keyboards), Karl Jenkins (oboe, piano, soprano sax), John Marshall (drums), Roy Babbington (bass) and Allan Holdsworth (guitar).

An accessible collection, Bundles showcased Holdsworth’s considerable guitar playing talents and opened a new chapter for the band. The album attracted much praise, especially the stunning five-part piece 'Hazard Profile’. Following the release of Bundles in March 1975 the band embarked on a busy touring schedule, but they soon faced the blow of Allan Holdsworth departing suddenly to join The New Tony Williams’ Lifetime.

Holdsworth was replaced by John Etheridge, and Soft Machine toured extensively for the remainder of 1975. A fabulous concert at Nottingham University on 11th October 1975 and featured much of the material featured on the album, along with early renditions of some pieces which would be recorded for the band’s 1976 album Softs.

- Allan Holdsworth / acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars
- Mike Ratledge / Fender Rhodes, Lowrey organ, AKS synthesizer
- Karl Jenkins / oboe, soprano saxophone, acoustic & electric pianos
- Roy Babbington / bass
- John Marshall / drums, percussion
With:

Yes - The Yes Album - 1971/2014 (Blu-ray Audio) [FLAC-HD]

The Yes Album is probably the most relaxed album and although the albums that followed this one are produced better and show much more experimentation and epic musicianship, the toned down, simplistic songs here are solid gold. This is one of the best Yes albums of , probably the first masterpiece they created which serves as a great starting point for newcomers.

  •  Jon Anderson (vocals, percussion)
  • Chris Squire (bass, vocals)
  • Steve Howe (acoustic and electric guitars, vocals)
  • Tony Kaye (piano, Hammond organ, Moog synthesiser)
  • Bill Bruford (drums, percussion)

Wish You Were Here : Another One for Woody - benefit show 2010-11-22 NY [FLAC]

Warren Haynes and members of the extended Gov’t Mule family celebrated the life and musical legacy of bassist Allen Woody. The Another One for Woody benefit show took place at New York’s Roseland Ballroom—the same venue that hosted the original One for Woody benefit a decade ago—and raised money for music education in public schools.

Remembering Allen Woody (1955-2000)

Douglas Allen Woody
(October 3, 1955 – August 26, 2000) was an American bass guitarist best known for his eight-year tenure in the Allman Brothers Band and as a co-founder of Gov't Mule.

In addition to helping revitalize the Allman Brothers during the late '80s, bassist Allen Woody helped co-form one of the '90s finest southern-retro rock acts, Gov't Mule. Born Douglas Allen Woody on October 2, 1956 in Nashville, Tennessee, Woody picked up both the mandolin and bass guitar at a very young age. Inspired by such bassists as Mountain's Felix Pappalardi, Cream's Jack Bruce, and Hot Tuna's Jack Casady, Woody began playing in local bands, and eventually majored in music at Middle Tennessee State University. It was through a job as a salesman at Nashville's famed Gruhn Guitar Store that Woody became friendly with several renowned musicians passing through the area, which led to an invite to join the Artimus Pyle Band (led by the ex-drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd). Through his association with the Pyle Band, Woody became friendly with Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band, who suggested that he try out for the group, who were in the process of reforming during the late '80s. Woody got the gig, as he toured and appeared on such releases as 1990's Seven Turns, 1991's Shades of Two Worlds, 1992's Evening With the Allman Brothers Band: First Set, 1994's Where It All Begins, and 1995's Evening With the Allman Brothers Band: 2nd Set. It was during his Allman association that Woody befriended fellow bandmate/guitarist Warren Haynes, which led to talk between the two of forming a side band - specializing in blues-based heavy rock (a la Mountain, Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc.). With drummer Matt Abts signed on as well, the trio took the name Gov't Mule, and issued their self-titled debut in 1995. But what was originally thought to be a side band soon took on a life of its own, and both Woody and Haynes handed in their resignations to the Allmans. Gov't Mule continued to solidify their standing as one of the U.S.' top blues-based hard rock acts, with such further releases as 1996's Live at Roseland Ballroom, 1998's Dose, 1999's Live with a Little Help from Our Friends, and 2000's Life Before Insanity. But just a few months after Gov't Mule's latest studio offering, Woody was found dead on Saturday, August 26th, 2000, in his hotel suite at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Queens, New York. After his passing, a fund was set up for Woody's young daughter, The Savannah Woody Educational Fund, while the surviving members of Gov't Mule decided to carry on. The group's next release, The Deep End: Vol. 1, including several different renowned bassists filling in for their late friend, while Woody himself made a posthumous appearance on a previously unreleased cover of Grand Funk Railroad's "Sin's a Good Man's Brother." In addition to his work with the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, Woody also guested on a few recordings by other artists, including Little Milton's Welcome to Little Milton and Kevn Kinney's Flower & the Knife.

Rising Low is Mike Gordon's second feature film – a documentary based on the life and death of Gov't Mule bassist Allen Woody and the making of a double-disc tribute album featuring a host of legendary bass players. Throughout the film, Gordon interviews Woody's family and bandmates and also discusses the philosophy and technique of bass playing with a number of the instrument's legends, including Chris Squire, Les Claypool, John Entwistle, Flea, Bootsy Collins, Mike Watt, Roger Glover and others.

VA - The British Invasion 1960-1968 : The History Of British Rock (9 CD, 1991)

Rhino's nine-volume British Invasion: The History of British Rock is the most exhaustive and essential overview of '60s British pop/rock available. Although the collection doesn't include tracks from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Herman's Hermits, the Dave Clark Five, and the early Animals, their absence doesn't hurt the series, since it spotlights several artists who never had more than a handful of hits, plus many forgotten gems. And there are plenty of major acts here, as well: The Kinks, the Small Faces, the Yardbirds, Donovan, the Hollies, the Zombies, the Spencer Davis Group, the Searchers, Manfred Mann, and Them are all represented by their best-known tracks. The collection runs from the beginnings of Merseybeat to the aftermath of psychedelia, meaning that it chronicles the evolution of British pop/rock quite effectively. But The History of British Rock shouldn't be thought of as simply an educational overview of one of the most vital eras of pop; each volume is fun and exciting, and sounds more like a good time than a history lesson. The series is one of the cornerstones of any comprehensive pop/rock collection.

The one-time rock and roll tour musician, who had a string of 1960s hits, is still a popular performer; often working with contemporaries such as Van Morrison and Bill Wyman.

Charley Patton - Complete Recordings 1929-1934 (5 CD, 2002/FLAC]

Charley Patton lived only into his 40s, but he left a large body of recorded work, which reveals a broad repertoire, much self-written. He came to his first recording session - in June 1929, for Paramount - with an established reputation. It was said his voice could be heard 500 yards away. The songs he recorded that day include some he had been honing for 20 years around the Delta. Pony Blues is usually cited as a masterpiece. He cut two versions. Both are good, the first is finer: he growls the lyrics, his guitar lopes and bucks. Patton's rhythms are one of his trademarks - complex, intricate, powerful, his fingering always precise. Listen to his playing on Down The Dirt Road Blues - he puts brilliant guitar phrases at the end of each stanza. Songs like Banty Rooster, with its beautiful slide work, and the idiosyncratic Spoonful represent the essence of Mississippi blues and are typical of Patton fast-and-loose approach to blues structures (there's not a standard 12-bar in Patton's recorded output) and rhythmic conventions. Even those who have studied Patton's lyrics find areas to dispute. The voice is gruff, the phrasing eccentric and his Mississippi accent can be impenetrable. But it's worth paying attention - Patton's songs evoke a world that has vanished. We hear of characters like Sheriff Tom Rushen, a lawman whom Patton knew well, for the wrong reasons. He did exist, although his name was actually Rushing. Other songs evoke things like the whistle of the Pea Vine train, or the boll weavil, which threatened the cotton crop - as Patton sings: ... (it) sucks all the blossom and leaves your hedges square. In each case, Patton's playing is crafted to the song. Throughout his career, Patton recorded religious material. Prayer Of Death, from the first session (sacred tunes, and a sermon whose words are as obscure as his song lyrics), is a powerful example. Patton died in 1934, still in demand. His reputation has burgeoned since.

Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene (2022/FLAC)

The Zealot Gene
is the 22nd studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released on 28 January 2022 by Inside Out Music. Nearly five years in production, it is their first studio album since The Jethro Tull Christmas Album (2003), and their first of all original material since J-Tull Dot Com (1999), marking the longest gap between the band's studio albums.

The Zealot Gene is the first Jethro Tull studio album to feature an entirely new lineup (other than Anderson), with guitarist Florian Opahle (who left the band between its recording and release), bassist David Goodier, keyboardist John O'Hara, and drummer Scott Hammond replacing four-fifths of The Jethro Tull Christmas Album lineup – Martin Barre, Jonathan Noyce, Andrew Giddings and Doane Perry respectively. The new lineup is the same that performed on Anderson's most recent solo album, Homo Erraticus (2014). The album is the first since This Was (1968) not to involve Barre in any capacity, as he was not asked to return when Anderson reformed Jethro Tull.

Grateful Dead - Anthem to Beauty (DVD 5/1999)

Anthem to Beauty is a music documentary about the making of the Grateful Dead albums Anthem of the Sun and American Beauty. It originally aired in a somewhat shortened version in 1997 as part of the television series Classic Albums. It was released on VHS video tape in 1998 and on DVD in 1999, with a running time of 1 hour 15 minutes.

The video combines footage from the early years of the Grateful Dead with 1997 interviews of former band members and associates. Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, Robert Hunter, and David Grisman, among others, discuss the creation of 1968's experimental, psychedelic Anthem of the Sun and 1970's folk-rock classic American Beauty. They also listen to and analyze the original master recordings for the albums, and talk about being in (or working with) the Grateful Dead at that time. Recording engineer Stephen Barncard rolls the original master tape and solos tracks, recalling the recording sessions and highlighting specific moments.

Keyboardist Tom Constanten discusses the artificiality of appearing on Hugh Hefner's show Playboy After Dark. David Grisman plays his full version of the mandolin part for Ripple, as he had intended.

The Hollies - The Clarke, Hicks & Nash Years 1963-68 [6 CD, 2011/FLAC]

Allan Clarke and Graham Nash had honed theirs for years before recruiting guitarist Tony Hicks, and when the trio turned their vocal beam on a song, it got Hollied. Their crushing vocal power lifted The Hollies above a myriad other bands plundering the R'n'B annals. The real collector's item is an eight-track live show from May 1968 in London, where they bang faultlessly through their hits.
