Steppenwolf - The Epic Years 1974-1976 (3 CD, 2023/FLAC)

Continuing where The Dunhill / ABC Years box set had left off last year, the next story from Steppenwolf’s legacy continues in the mid-70s when they reformed and signed to Epic Records when they released three albums from the label (Slow Flux, Hour of the Wolf, and Skullduggery) from 1974 to 1976. The next box set from Esoteric Recordings gives us an insight by giving their time with Epic, the proper recognition it deserves.

On Valentine’s Day 1972, Steppenwolf was put to bed. It was the same day that the Mayor of Los Angeles’ own Sam Yorty officially designated as “Steppenwolf Day”. By this time John Kay embarked on a solo career and released two studio albums from the Dunhill label between ’72 and ’73; Forgotten Songs and Unsung Heroes, and My Sportin’ Life.

Steppenwolf / John Kay discography [1968-2009]

Steppenwolf are a Canadian-American, hard rock group that was prominent in the late 1960s. The group was formed in 1967 in Los Angeles by vocalist John Kay, guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, keyboardist Goldy McJohn and drummer Jerry Edmonton after the dissolution of Toronto group The Sparrows of which Moreve was not a member.

Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1974, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. Today, frontman John Kay is the only original member left, having served as lead singer for more than 40 years since 1967.

Steppenwolf - Silver (2 CD, 1997/FLAC)

SILVER, 1997's double-disc Steppenwolf anthology, digs deeper into the creme de la creme of this classic rock band than the 1999's single-disc ALL TIME GREATEST HITS. Steppenwolf was one of the first bands to specialize in cranked-up-to-ten anthems. These guys definitely lent a helping hand in creating heavy metal.

The Steppenwolf sound is best displayed on the hits ("Born to Be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride," "Rock Me"). These songs remain rock-radio standards. Also featured are such highlights as the mid-paced "It's Never too Late" and a pair of anti-drug diatribes, "The Pusher" and "Snowblind Friend."

Steppenwolf Featuring John Kay - Born To Be Wild / A Retrospective [2 CD, 1991/FLAC]

Born to Be Wild – A Retrospective
is a 1991 greatest hits album by Steppenwolf. It was the first attempt at a serious historical overview of the band and its founder/leader's career.
