DELANEY & BONNIE with THE ALLMANS – The Classic Studio Session 1971 (2022) [FLAC]

An outstanding 1971 studio concert broadcast, featuring Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, hot off the road with Eric Clapton and George Harrison, live at A&R Recording Studios in New York City – this time with friends Duane & Gregg Allman and King Curtis. The show begins acoustically (listen to D&B & Duane on “Come on in My Kitchen”) then gets rowdy and electric for the second half. There s a lot of chatter too which is endlessly fascinating and while the electric set has some minor sonic issues, the historic significance of this recording is rich the 18 minute “Only You Know And I Know”, featuring smokin leads by King Curtis & Gregg Allman is a pure joy to behold.

Speaking of historic significance, it should be remembered that both Clapton & Harrison escaped the restrictions of their respective bands to hit the road with the Bramletts, and Clapton raided D&B s Friends to form Derek & The Dominos (while the Stones snagged Bobby Keys and Jim Price who debuted on D&B s Accept No Substitute). Delaney Bramlett, who passed away in 2008 at 69, also produced and co-wrote one of Clapton s best solo albums, 1970s Eric Clapton.

Eric Clapton & Duane Allman- 1970-08-27 Criteria Studios, Miami, FL (2 CD) [FLAC]

"Tom Dowd is responsible for introducing Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. In 1970, Dowd was in the middle of recording the Allman Brother's second album, Idlewild South, when Eric's manager (Robert Stigwood) called to tell Tom that Eric would like to bring his new band, Derek and the Dominos, to Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida to record with him.

Tom later recounted the phone call that began it all. Now when the call came I was in the studio with Duane. I said, Hey, that's a hot one, kid! That was Eric Clapton's management talking about him coming here to record. Allman looks at me and goes You mean the guy from Cream? Do you think he'd mind if I just came to watch. I told him, no problem.

Eric and the rest of the Dominos arrived at Criteria Studios in late August. During the first week, most of the studio time was spent jamming and piecing together new songs."

Duane Allman - An Anthology Vol.1, 2, 3 [3 x 2 CD]

Howard Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 – October 29, 1971) was an American session musician and lead guitarist of the southern rock group, The Allman Brothers Band. Allman is best remembered for his brief but influential tenure in the band he helped co-found, as well as his inspired slide guitar and improvisational skills. Besides his work with The Allman Brothers Band, Allman led an established session musician life, lending his skills to the likes of King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, and Herbie Mann. He also had a major role on the 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Allman as number two on their list of the greatest guitarists of all time, trailing only Jimi Hendrix. Allman died in 1971 at the age of twenty-four after enduring a motorcycle accident that crushed several internal organs. He was laid to rest in Macon, Georgia, and would be joined by bassist Berry Oakley a little over a year later. While his recording career only lasted a little more than six years ('66-'71),Duane Allman's playing was heard not only with the Allman Brothers Band, but on a variety of important records by other artists as well. Hence this posthumous 1972 double-album collection, which--besides five Allman Brothers tracks--includes many memorable solos by the distinctive slide guitarist from sessions at the fabled Fame and Muscle Shoals studios.

Duane Allman - Skydog : The Duane Allman Retrospective [7 CD, 2013]

It's difficult to call a guitarist who routinely shows up in the upper reaches of "100 Greatest Guitarists Ever" lists underappreciated, and yet the first impression the towering seven-disc box set Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective makes is that Duane Allman does not receive his proper due. Sure, the Allman Brothers Band are one of the staples of classic rock, a band that carved out the blues-drenched sound of Southern rock while also establishing a template for jam bands to come, and Duane's contributions were crucial in making Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs Eric Clapton's finest moment, and that would be enough for a substantial legacy even if Allman hadn't died in a tragic motorcycle accident at the age of 24, but that was only part of the story. The rest is told on Skydog, a box set that has its origins on a collection Bill Levenson began in the early '90s, just after he compiled the four-disc Allman Brothers Band box, Dreams, in 1989, which didn't see fruition until 2013, after years of work by the renowned rock & roll archivist and Galadrielle Allman, Duane's daughter. Both had their reasons for delivering a testament to everything Duane Allman achieved in his short life, and that dedication pays off wildly on Skydog, as great a box set as has ever been released.
