John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band (The Ultimate Collection, 8 CD, 2021) [FLAC + 24/192]

“Plastic Ono Band,” released in December 1970, was John Lennon’s first solo album after the breakup of the Beatles earlier that year. It was a far cry from the tuneful reassurance of Paul McCartney’s one-man-studio-band album “McCartney” and the polished abundance of George Harrison’s triple album, “All Things Must Pass,” both of which were also released that year. In both music and lyrics, “Plastic Ono Band” was a stark statement of pain, separation, vulnerability and self-reclamation after the whirlwind that had been Lennon’s life as a Beatle. Half a century later, the album retains its power.

Now it has been remixed, massively expanded, anatomized and annotated as “Plastic Ono Band: The Ultimate Collection”. The compilation was produced by Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow and a producer (with Lennon and Phil Spector) of the original album, and Simon Hilton; there are other configurations for less obsessive fans.

The Police - Every Move You Make- The Studio Recordings (6 CD, 2019) [24-96]

Over the course of just five albums released between 1978 and 1983, The Police synthesized pop, rock, New Wave, and world music sounds including, most notably, reggae into a style all their own. Incorporating influences of punk and jazz into the mix, their sound still reverberates today. Vocalist-bassist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers, and drummer Stewart Copeland called it a day before 1986 was out, reuniting in 2007-2008 for a phenomenally successful tour before going their separate ways yet again. Their small but significant catalogue has been remastered a couple of times previously – once in 1995, and again in 2003.

Led Zeppelin - For Badgeholders Only (LA Forum, 21st – 27th June 1977) [18 CD]

Empress Valley’s massive box set For Badge Holders Only caught collectors by surprise. Nowhere was it ever mentioned this was in production. This is an eighteen disc plus one DVD box set. It has two designs on the front cover and each is limited to only one hundred fifty copies. This is the third time a box set with Led Zeppelin’s eleventh tour Los Angeles shows has been released. The first was A Week For Badge Holders (Tarantura T19CD-BOX (T19CD-1~19)). At the time this was a startling achievement and is an extremely rare piece. However Tarantura used the first hour of the June 14th New York show for the June 22nd tape for some reason. After this Power & Glory (The Diagrams Of Led Zeppelin TDOLZ Vol. 50-55). This was a solid set but for the June 22nd show they edited in ”Ten Years Gone” from an alternate source for the June 21st show. Also they used some high generation tapes which is noticeable especially on the June 25th concert.

In the intervening decade since the release of the Diagrams set there have been a multitude of releases of the four Millard taped concerts. In the past two years both Wendy and Scorpio issued these shows and both released the Eddie show twice. This set finds partial redemption in issuing the first complete version of the June 22nd show on silver for the first time. Empress Valley are also trying hard to associate this with their excellent Deep Throat boxset, which covers the three Los Angeles shows from 1975 and now commands high prices. What follows are brief comments regarding each of the shows in this set.

Thin Lizzy - Live At The BBC [6 CD, 2011]

A massive seven-disc box set of the group’s rare performances, culled from the BBC recordings which still exist in the archives. The recordings chart the band’s progression from their early years, three piece version to the band’s high point, becoming known as one of the greatest live acts of all time. This is the first time these recordings have been collected together and offered in a complete set.

The set includes the last concert with bassist Phil Lynott, from the Reading festival in 1983, as well as a DVD of the band’s appearances on Top of the Pops and the Old Grey Whistle Test. Lynott passed away in 1986.

Blue Öyster Cult : The Complete Columbia Albums Collection (16 CD + DVD + DVDRIP, 2012/FLAC)

Originally formed in Long Island as Soft White Underbelly in 1967, Blue Oyster Cult combined adventurous lyrical themes with an aggressive instrumental sound. With passion and intelligence on display in equal measure, Blue Oyster Cult became the thinking fan's rock band and a sign of life in a sea of dull, anemic soft-pop. Anthems like "Godzilla," "Harvester of Eyes" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" stretched the boundaries of rock topics while lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser became a hero to legions of budding axe-wielders. The band's mystique extended to their album artwork, resulting in some of the most distinctive and iconic LP covers of the rock era.

Eleven of the American rock band’s studio albums are included in The Complete Columbia Albums Collection (ending with 1988’s Imginos), alongside three live releases, a live DVD and two bonus CDs of rarities and live radio performances.

Many of the discs retain the bonus tracks from previous releases and the set also includes newly mastered versions of On Your Feet or on Your Knees, Fire of Unknown Origin, The Revölution by Night, Mirrors, Cultösaurus Erectus, Extraterrestrial Live, Club Ninja and Imaginos.

AC/DC - The Complete Soundboard Collection With Bon Scott 1976-1979 [13 CD + DVD + DVDRIP, 2011/FLAC]

Bon Scott , the charismatic and now legendary front man for AC/DC who died on the eve of superstardom and who left a incredible musical legacy, the man who gave us such memorable quotes as “people ask me if i’m AC or DC, neither I’m the lightning in the middle” is the subject, or catalyst, for this exciting new release. Without alot of hoopla along comes this box set that presents all of the soundboard live recordings that feature Bon Scott on vocals. Since the band was in their formative years and were a touring band they used radio as a means to get their music out to people to be heard, the majority of this set is culled from these radio broadcasts. They are not only among the best in quality but also performance.

Since AC/DC themselves have released a lot from their vaults in terms of audio and video of the Bon Scott era these recordings are the missing pieces of the puzzle and for any collector must be considered essential documents, thankfully they can be heard the way the band intended, at high volumes. While all these recordings circulate in trading circles and many have been released on vinyl or CD bootlegs most are out of print and scarce so this is an excellent way to have them all one set.

John Mayall - The First Generation 1965-1974 [35 CD, 2021]

John Mayall’s The First Generation 1965-1974 is an enormous 35CD box set that documents the early career of ‘The Godfather of British Blues’, with remastered studio albums, unreleased BBC recordings, previously unheard live gigs and more.

For a short but compelling time in the ’60s and ’70s, John Mayall recognised raw talent, took it in, nurtured it, and everyone thrived and benefitted as a result. Many of the best musicians of the period passed through the ranks of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. All are on show here in this set with an abundance of musical highlights.

The unreleased concerts include Windsor 1967, Gothenburg 1968, Berlin 1969 and San Francisco 1970 and the 28 unreleased BBC tracks feature none other than Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor!

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society 1968 [5 CD, 2018/FLAC]

The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society is the sixth studio album by the English rock group the Kinks, released in November 1968. It was the last album by the original quartet (Ray Davies, Dave Davies, Pete Quaife, Mick Avory), as bassist Quaife left the group in early 1969. A collection of vignettes of English life, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was assembled from songs written and recorded over the previous two years.

Although the record is widely considered one of the most influential and important works by the Kinks, it failed to chart upon release, selling about 100,000 copies. In 2003 the album was ranked number 255 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Glenn Frey - Above The Clouds : The Collection (3 CD, 2018) [FLAC]

Though he passed away at far too young an age in 2016, the late Glenn Frey remains a looming presence as the Eagles embark on a new North American tour that will take the reconstituted band – now featuring Frey’s son Deacon as well as country superstar Vince Gill – on the road through October. Now, even as his music is being sung nightly by his bandmates, Geffen Records is celebrating his career with a new box set. Above the Clouds: The Collection highlighting key tracks from Frey as well as the long-awaited, official CD premiere of Longbranch/Pennywhistle, his early collaboration with friend J.D. Souther.

Bob Dylan - For Sale or Just On The Shelf [6 CD studio outtakes]

Selected alternate mixes and live performances are included for interest and comparison.

Discs from this collection began to appear on sale one by one at the beginning of 1998.
