Fairport Convention - A Lasting Spirit 1967 - 1997 (3 CD, 2005/FLAC)

This Fairport Convention triple-CD set represents a startlingly good idea that comes off well -- a compilation of live performances from across the group's history, intermingling class concert recordings from back as far as the late '60s with much more recent work from the Cropredy Festival. What one comes away appreciating anew is just how good a rock band Fairport has been for most of its history -- at their best, in fact, as represented here (including recent performances by Richard Thompson), they come off as at least as good a rock band as, say, Jethro Tull is a folk outfit, if not better. The sound is good, even on the older material (which goes back to Julie Dyble's tenure with the group), and the selection covers a huge range of repertory, some of which will surprise and delight casual fans who may not know all of the strings to this band's bow.

Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar); Sandy Denny, Judy Dyble (vocals); Ian Matthews, Simon Nicol (guitar); Ashley Hutchings (bass instrument); Martin Lamble (drums); Chris Leslie, Dave Mattacks, Dave Pegg, Dave Swarbrick, Gerry Conway, Jerry Donahue, Maartin Allcock, Norma Waterson, Ralph McTell, Ric Saunders, Gill Allcock, Martin Cathy, Cathy Le Surf, Vicki Clayton, Bruce Rowland.

Fairport Convention- Come All Ye - The First Ten Years (1968 to 1978) (7 CD, 2017)

Compiled by Andrew Batt, the curator of the very successful show, ‘The Lady – A Tribute To Sandy Denny’, which toured the UK in 2012, this collection celebrates Fairport Convention’s first 10 years, beginning with their eponymous debut for Polydor in 1968, through all of their seminal albums for Island Records and finishing with tracks from their two albums for Vertigo, The Bonny Bunch of Roses and Tippers Tales.

Of the 121 tracks featured here, 55 are previously unreleased. Highlights include key tracks from all of their classic albums, single B-sides, BBC Radio Sessions, 5 songs from the French TV programme, ‘Pop 2’ (December 1970), 5 songs from the Television show, ‘The Man They Couldn’t Hang’ (1971) and the audio for an entire concert at The Fairfield Halls, Croydon (December 16th 1973) plus 2 songs recorded live for the Scottish Television programme, ‘Anne Lorne Gillies – The World of Music’ (1976). The set comes complete with liner notes by respected English writer, Patrick Humphries, author of many highly regarded books including, ‘Nick Drake – The Biography’ ( Bloomsbury 1998 ), ‘Richard Thompson – The Biography’ ( Music Sales Ltd 1997 ) and ‘The Many Lives of Tom Waites’ (Omnibus Press 1989).

Fairport Convention - Live At The BBC 1967-1974 [ 4 CD, 2007]

2007 four CD box set that includes all of the British Folk legends' surviving BBC radio recordings, which were taped between 1967 and 1974. It was thought, until recently, that very few of these recordings from this time remained in the BBC’s archive, but a few years ago a box was discovered on a shelf at the BBC. It is a marvelous addition to the Fairport collection and is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the formation of the band The Fairports, the single best British Folk-Rock band of the late '60s, did more than any other act to develop a truly British variation on the Folk-Rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material and styles indigenous to the British Isles.
