Limited box set from the British rockers. This release is collated from
all of the BBC owned Kinks recordings that still exist in the archive
and charts the inexorable rise of the band: from the first steps on the
Pye label, to the glory days as one of the greatest acts of all time.
The BBC gave the band a platform and support at crucial stages in their
career and The Kinks At The BBC could be seen essentially as an
alternate Greatest Hits, a musical growing up in public. This incredible
archive represents a great set of previously unreleased recordings in
the Kinks catalog. The collection has been brought together by trawling
the BBC archives, but also by inviting contributions from fans. This is a
first for the band as these recordings have never been available in one
place before. The Kinks At The BBC is a triumphant collection of the
defining moments of a truly seminal British band, as witnessed,
broadcast and archived by the voice of the nation, the BBC.
"The Kinks at the BBC" expands on the two disc set BBC Sessions 1964-1977 from a decade ago including the bulk of BBC live tracks from 1963 to 1994 covering the band's entire history.
The set features the best quality available for many of these takes. There are also a number of tracks that are from off air recordings that no longer exist in the BBC archives and are collected on disc five. The sound quality for discs 1-4 are pretty good and improve as we move towards later recordings. While the sound quality for disc five is dicey, it's nice to have these rare recordings in any form for hardcore fans. The fifth disc also includes The Kinks appearing on "The Emma Freud Show" (which are pretty good fidelity).
Be aware that some of the tracks here were previously released (KinksKinda Kinks)and there are some that are basic tracks that were aired on the BBC (some "alternate" takes for "Arthur" as well as tracks like "King Kong" and "Plastic Man") as well but the bulk of these tracks have never beenr released before.
The music for this set was remastered by Andrew Sandoval with Dan Hersch. This is a worthwhile set for fans with seminal recordings over a variety of years and periods from The Kinks career.
