Georgia Satellites - Ultimate (3 CD, 2021/FLAC)

Georgia Satellites hail from Atlanta, Georgia. In 1986 they signed to Elektra Records and set about recording their first album with Jeff Glixman. The band’s first single, ‘Keep Your Hands To Yourself’ stormed the US charts, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band recorded a total of three studio albums for Elektra before Dan Baird left to pursue a solo career. The band continued with numerous changes of personnel but their musical legacy lives on with live performances across the US. The band always enjoyed a reputation for being excellent live and Rick Richards still leads the current line-up of the band on the road.

This 3 CD, 54 track ultimate collection focuses on the band’s output whilst signed to Elektra Records. Spanning the years 1986 to 1990, the band released three studio albums and various singles that feature on this collection plus the related bonus tracks taken from the band’s b-sides and 12” releases. It is the definitive collection of the band’s material available. CD 1 features the ten original album tracks of the band’s first studio album “Georgia Satellites” that was released in 1986. It was produced by Jeff Glixman. There are eight bonus tracks including two mixes, Party Mix and Kick ‘N’ Lick Remix of the single ‘Battleship Chains’, five live tracks including the band’s cover of Lou Reed’s ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’, which featured as a b-side on the band’s best known single ‘Keep Your Hands To Yourself’. The bonus material includes the remix of their single, ‘Sheila’ along with live recordings of ‘Let It Rock’, ‘Battleship Chains’ and ‘Railroad Steel’.” CD 3 is the band’s final Elektra album, “In The Land Of Salvation And Sin” from 1989. Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs - 1948-59 [ 4 CD, 1991]

Lester Flatt, guitar, and Earl Scruggs, banjo, were two musicians who were probably predestined to play together. They learnt their trade as Bluegrass Boys with Bill Monroe, as so many artists did, eventually leaving Bill in 1948. And it is at this point where this 4 CD Bear Family Box Set picks them up. Originally signing for Mercury, CD 1 comprises their complete recordings for this label, which include famous tracks like Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Roll In My Sweet Babys Arms. The other three CDs deal with their early period on Columbia from late 1950 to 1959.

Johnny Otis Rhythm & Blues Caravan - The Complete Savoy Recordings [3 CD, 1999/FLAC]

Although generally best known to the masses for his 1958 hit with the Bo Diddley beat, "Willie and the Hand Jive," Johnny Otis has had a remarkable career. For more than 50 years, Otis has been a drummer, vibraphonist, bandleader, record producer, talent scout, label owner, nightclub impresario, disc jockey, TV variety-show host, author, rock & roll star, painter, and entrepreneur in the health-food business. Born in Northern California in 1921 to Greek-American parents (his real name is John Veliotes), Otis felt more comfortable with the African-American culture that surrounded him in his formative years and adopted it as his own. The Complete Savoy Recordings is a 3-CD compilation that stylishly presents his beginnings as a bandleader and talent scout. As amply displayed here, Otis deserves his place in the upper tier of rhythm & blues pioneers. Through his work with and discoveries of such renowned talent as Jimmy Rushing, Little Esther Philips, the Robins (some of whom went on to form the Coasters), Mel Walker, Marilyn Scott, Linda Hopkins, Bill Doggett, and Jay McNeely, Otis has had a profound influence on American music.
