REO Speedwagon- The Classic Years 1978-1990 [9 CD, 2019/FLAC + 320]

By the end of the 70s and beginning of the 80s, R.E.O. Speedwagon had won the hearts, minds and airwaves of continental North America. This hard won ascendance was comprehensively documented on the 8CD “Early Years 1971-1977” collection from HNE.

R.E.O. Speedwagon’s long history goes way back to their formation in Champaign, Illinois in 1967. Initially a covers band playing bars and fraternity houses, the initial line-up featuring Neal Doughty on keyboards and Alan Gratzer on drums and vocals, named themselves after the R.E.O. Speed Wagon, a model of American flat-bed truck.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Transmission Impossible (3 CD, 2016/FLAC)

The most formidable of contemporary rock groups, the Red Hot Chili Peppers don t just defy categorisation, they appear to invent their own with every new release - and often do likewise within the confines of a live performance. Indeed, the group s startling eclecticism is only surpassed by their lofty talents and astonishing musical catalogue.

This 3 x CD set features a selection of rare FM radio broadcasts recorded between the end of the 1980s and the middle of the 1990s, when for many the band were at their absolute pinnacle of achievement. Kicking off with a show recorded at the famous Ahoy venue in Rotterdam in 1995, the collection continues in reverse order with a recording from the equally familiar Pat O Brien Pavilion in Del Mar, California in 91. Last up comes a terrific performance from the Chilis given in Kawasaki, Japan in 1990, which concludes an extraordinary selection of live performances that provide evidence if such were ever required of the Red Hot Chili Peppers peerless position as the finest live musical act working today.

REO Speedwagon - The Early Years 1971-1977 (8 CD, 2018/FLAC)

When “Keep on Loving You” reached the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980, some listeners could be forgiven for thinking that REO Speedwagon came out of nowhere. Prior to that seminal power ballad, the Illinois-formed band had never attained a chart position higher than No. 56 (“Time for Me to Fly,” 1978). When the success of “Take It on the Run” (No. 5) quickly followed, it was clear that REO Speedwagon was here to stay. But their success was hard-earned, and their catalogue already quite deep by the dawn of the new decade. The original group formed in 1967; after conquering the local and regional scenes, the band signed with Epic Records in 1971. Now, the first part of their Epic journey has been chronicled on a comprehensive new box set. The Early Years 1971-1977, available now from Cherry Red’s Hear No Evil imprint, has REO’s first six studio albums and first live album remastered and expanded on 8 CDs.

Including The Albums Present, Real Time, Trisector, Live At The Paradiso, A Grounding In Numbers, Alt, Merlin Atmos and Do Not Disturb.

Van der Graaf Generator were one of the most original and inspiring bands of the 1970s. When Peter Hamill, Hugh Banton, Guy Evans and David Jackson announced their reformation in 2005 to perform concerts and to record a new album, it took many by surprise, but the group proved they were still making relevant and truly progressive music.

Their reunion would not be a short-lived affair, as VdGG continued to record a series of excellent studio and live albums, despite the departure of David Jackson in late 2005 following the release of the album ‘Present’. Over the next ten years VdGG issued a string of albums and toured as the mood took them.

This boxed set celebrates this second era of Van der Graaf Generator with all of the albums issued by the band between 2005 and 2016 and includes the long deleted live double album and concert DVD Live At Paradiso and the rare additional live CD previously issued only on the limited Japanese release of Real Time.

The J.B.'s - Funky Good Time: The Anthology (2 CD, 1995/FLAC)

The J.B.'s recorded under various billings in the early '70s, including the J.B.'s, Fred Wesley & the J.B.'s, Maceo & the Macks, the First Family, the Last Word, and others. This double CD gathers 30 of the prime tracks by all of the above configurations from the first half of the '70s, including all nine of their chart hits and quite a few rare singles and long versions. Often, James Brown himself chips in with incidental vocals (though this is mostly instrumental) and keyboards. The two-and-a-half-hour program can start to sound monotonous if taken all at once, but it's prime, often riveting funk, jammed with lockstep grooves that vary between basic R&B vamps and imaginative, almost jazzy improvisation.

James Brown (vocals, organ, synthesizer, drums); Lyn Collins, Vicki Anderson (vocals); Phelps "Catfish" Collins, Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, Jimmy Nolen (guitar); Jimmy Parker (alto saxophone); Maceo Parker (alto saxophone, flute); St. Clair Pinckney (tenor saxophone); Darryl "Hasaan" Jamison, Jerone "Jasaan" Sanford, Russell Crimes, Isaiah "Ike" Oakley (trumpet); Fred Wesley (trombone, vocals); Bobby Byrd (piano); Dave Matthews (electric piano, organ); William "Bootsy" Collins, Fred Thomas (bass); John "Jabo" Starks (drums); Johnny Griggs (congas).

Joni Mitchell - Archives, Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971) [5 CD, 2021/FLAC]

The first volume of the Joni Mitchell Archives series shed significant light on the beginning of Mitchell’s musical journey, compiling a wealth of unreleased demos, radio broadcasts, and live tapes from the years just before she began making records. The extensive collection painted a detailed picture of Mitchell’s nascent years growing as a songwriter and performer in the independent folkie scene, and Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 2: The Reprise Years 1968-1971 does just as thorough and impressive a job of drawing back the curtain on the lively period surrounding her first four albums.

The collection moves in chronological order, beginning with some rough home demos for songs from 1968 debut Song to a Seagull and its 1969 follow-up, Clouds. Hissy home recordings of tracks like Clouds’ “Roses Blue” offer interesting counterpoint to the more polished studio versions, and documentation of this phase also includes outtakes from the Song to a Seagull sessions.
