Lionel Richie discography [1982-2019]

Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. (born June 20, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and television personality. During the 1970s, he recorded with the funk band the Commodores, and his solo career made him one of the most successful balladeers of the 1980s. Outside of his music career, he has served with Luke Bryan and Katy Perry as a judge for the singing competition American Idol since its move to ABC from the Fox network, since 2018.

VA - Time Life - Solid Gold Soul (1965-1980s) (14 CD, 1996-2000)

While the Rhythm & Blues series and the Solid Gold Soul series were not identical, they had a huge overlap, so are covered here together. Essentially, the Solid Gold Soul series was a reissue of the earlier Rhythm & Blues series with much more colorful artwork. Although there were CDs in each series that were not in the other, a vast majority of the CDs in Solid Gold Soul were exact reissues of the earlier Rhythm & Blues series.

The Rhythm and Blues series was a late 1980s-early 1990s subscription offering that concentrated on music from the R&B or soul charts. The series was successful, and eventually reached 24 volumes plus a budget 2-CD compilation, covering the early 1950s to the mid-1970s.

Starting around 1996, the volumes of the Rhythm and Blues series by year were reissued as the Solid Gold Soul series, with completely different artwork, even though the CDs inside were trackwise and sonically identical to the corresponding volume in the earlier Rhythm and Blues series. The new series used the R838- prefix instead of the old RHD- prefix. The Solid Gold Soul series did not include all the volumes in the Rhythm and Blues series, and later issued new volumes that weren't included with the older series, eventually reaching 31 volumes plus a budget box set and a special edition CD. In the late 1990s, Time-Life was selling both series side by side.

Wilson Pickett - Funky Midnight Mover: The Atlantic Studio Recordings (1962-1978) [6 CD, 2010/FLAC]

Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American R&B/Soul singer and songwriter.

Wilson Pickett was a force of nature, a one-man hurricane that blew everything out of his path. As he sang in one of his many Top 40 R&B singles, he was A Man and a Half, a title so fitting it served as a summary for Rhino’s 1993 double-disc compilation, a collection that stood as the most exhaustive Pickett retrospective until Rhino Handmade unleashed the six-disc box Funky Midnight Mover: The Atlantic Recordings (1962-1978), a monumental testament to the sweatiest, grittiest, soul singer who ever grabbed a microphone. This set may not be billed as the "complete recordings", but it is effectively that, rounding up all the master takes Pickett cut for Atlantic during those 16 years, dipping back for a few sides by his early group the Falcons, skipping his three-year sojourn at RCA from 1972-1975, adding some rarities, but essentially serving up all his prime titles in a handsome, hardcover book. Subtlety wasn’t quite Pickett’s strong suit, but that isn’t a liability: no matter what song came his way, he never sounded anything less than committed, and in the case of his disco dabblings of the late ‘70s, it could be some real dregs indeed. As this set illustrates, Pickett was game to follow the shifting sands of fashion, singing blaxploitation funk at the beginning of the ‘70s and glitzy disco at the end of it, singing it with the same fire he had when he was at Muscle Shoals in the late ‘60s, where he cut such timeless sides as “In the Midnight Hour,” “Knock on Wood,” “634-5789 (Soulsville USA),” “Mustang Sally,” and “Funky Broadway.” These singles naturally form the foundation of Funky Midnight Mover, but that is to be expected, as they’re always the core of any Pickett collection -- what the box proves is the magnitude of his talent and the consistency of his prime. Dig deeper than the ‘60s hits and there’s a wealth of great music -- pure, uncut Southern soul that’s sometimes adventurous, like when Wilson flirted with rock & roll on covers of “Hey Joe” and “Hey Jude”-- but what impresses is how Pickett remains a dynamic force even when the quality of the songs dips, as it undeniably does in his second stint at Atlantic. Despite this limp ending, the box never feels weak, it’s always strong and soulful, a necessary monument to a talent with no parallel in his time or in any other.

Lionel Richie - The Definitive Collection (2 CD, 2003/FLAC)

Although rooted in soul and R&B, Lionel Richie became a global superstar of the pop charts, blurring musical borders in the 1980s with solo hits like "All Night Long (All Night)," "Hello," and "Stuck On You," as well as chart-topping collaborations like the Diana Ross duet "Endless Love" and the star-studded charity single "We Are the World" which he co-wrote with Michael Jackson. A consummate singer, songwriter, and producer, Richie steered the Commodores into their most successful period, fronting the band on late-'70s hits like "Easy" and "Three Times a Lady" before making himself a household name as one of the most dominant male solo acts of the following decade. During his commercial peak, he proved himself a master of smooth romantic balladry, sending songs like "Truly" and the Oscar-winning "Say You, Say Me," to the top of the pop charts, though he also had a knack for more uptempo fare like 1986's "Dancing On the Ceiling." Richie also forged a unique crossover connection to country music, writing and producing for Kenny Rogers and collaborating with Alabama. Although his popularity faded during the '90s and early-2000s, Richie updated his sound with 2006's Coming Home and was rewarded with his first Top Ten LP in twenty years. The singer's renaissance continued over the next decade with 2012's country-driven Tuskegee returning him to the top of the pop charts. Beginning in 2018, Richie began a new high profile role as a judge on American Idol, introducing him to younger generations of fans.

VA - The Many Faces Of Tina Turner (3 CD, 2018/FLAC)

One of the most dynamic female soul singers in the history of music, Tina Turner oozed sexuality from every pore in a performing career that began the moment she stepped on-stage as lead singer of The Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the late '50s. Her gritty and growling performances beat down doors everywhere, looking back to the double-barreled attack of gospel fervor and sexual abandon that had originally formed soul back then. After almost fifty years in the music business, Tina Turner has become one of the most commercially-successful international female rock stars to date. Her sultry, powerful voice, her time-tested beauty and her unforgettable story, all contribute to her legendary status. In The Many Faces of Tina Turner we will explore a different side of her career that features her early work -along her then-husband Ike Turner, her legendary duets, many of her collaborators and a tribute to her fantastic catalog. With fantastic artwork and remastered sound, The Many Faces of Tina Turner in an essential addition to the Many Faces collection, and remember that the album is not available on streaming platforms!

Otis Redding - The Complete Stax-Volt Singles Collection [3 CD, 2013]

The very face of classic Southern soul is Otis Redding, whose incendiary and passionate singing and stage presence came as close as anyone's to transferring the energy, explosiveness, and drive of Southern gospel into the secular pop world of soul. Otis Redding's recording career really only lasted five years, from 1962 through 1967 (seven studio albums in all), and the balance of it, along with his biggest hits, really only came in the last two years of that time, with his biggest hit and first number one, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," released after his death. All of it was enough, though, to establish Redding as the greatest performer of the classic deep soul era, a designation he undoubtedly deserves. This wonderful three-disc, 70-track set collects all of Redding's singles, both the A- and B-sides, including a couple of holiday releases, plus his singles with fellow Stax Records star Carla Thomas, in the original mono mixes. Mono is how these tracks were meant to be heard, mixed to sound powerful blasting from radios and jukeboxes, and even played through 21st century sound devices, these mixes are incredible to hear, all power and passion. This was -- and is -- soul.
