Bob Dylan & the Hawks - Eat the Document (1966 video)

Eat the Document is a documentary of Bob Dylan's 1966 tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland with the Hawks. The cover photo was taken on the train line between Belfast and Dublin, near Balbriggan. It was shot under Dylan's direction by D. A. Pennebaker, whose groundbreaking documentary Dont Look Back chronicled Dylan's 1965 British tour. The film was originally commissioned for the ABC television series ABC Stage 67.

Though shooting had completed for the film, Dylan's July 1966 motorcycle accident delayed the editing process. Once well enough to work again, Dylan edited the film himself. ABC rejected the film as incomprehensible for a mainstream audience.

It has never been released on home video and prints are rarely screened in theaters. Some footage from Eat the Document was used in Martin Scorsese's 2005 documentary on Bob Dylan, No Direction Home, and 3 song excerpts are special features on the DVD.

Bob Dylan - The Genuine Basement Tapes 1967 (5 CD, 1990/FLAC)

On July 29 1966, Dylan suffered a mild concussion and cracked vertebrae when he crashed his Triumph motorcycle near Woodstock, New York. While he was recovering, Dylan reviewed a preliminary cut of D. A. Pennebaker's documentary of the 1966 world tour.  Dissatisfied with Pennebaker's results, Dylan re-edited the footage into a surrealistic film, titled Eat the Document

Dylan spent this time thinking a lot about the direction he had been going, in which he felt exhausted from non-stop touring. Dylan later recalled, "The turning point was back in Woodstock. A little after the accident. Sitting around one night under a full moon, I looked out into the bleak woods and I said, 'Something's gotta change.'"

According to the late Rick Danko, he, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson joined Robbie Robertson in West Saugerties in February 1967. Sometime between March and June (the date is uncertain) Dylan and the Hawks began a series of informal recording sessions. These sessions eventually moved to the basement of Big Pink. Garth Hudson set up a recording unit, using two stereo mixers and a tape recorder borrowed from Grossman, as well as a set of microphones from Peter, Paul and Mary. Dylan would later say "That's really the way to do a recording-in a peaceful, relaxed setting-in somebody's basement with the windows open ... and a dog lying on the floor."

In a matter of months, Dylan would record at least thirty new compositions with the Hawks, including some of the most celebrated songs of his career: "I Shall Be Released," "This Wheel's On Fire," "Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)," "Million Dollar Bash," "Tears of Rage," "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere," "Going To Acapulco," "I'm Not There (1956)," "All You Have To Do Is Dream," "Apple Suckling Tree" and others. Eventually, rumors of Dylan and The Band's enormous stash of unreleased recordings began to circulate.

Bob Dylan - Biograph (3 CD, 1985)

Historically, Biograph is significant not for what it did for Dylan's career, but for establishing the box set, complete with hits and rarities, as a viable part of rock history. Following Biograph, multi-disc box sets for veteran rockers became accepted and almost the norm, but that doesn't discount this set's strengths as a summary of Dylan's career, using the familiar and the rare to draw a fully rounded portrait of his strengths as a songwriter, musician, and record-maker in a way that conventional choices alone couldn't achieve. Certainly, the chief attraction of this set, even years after its initial release, is its smattering of rarities that aren't just rare, but revealing -- ranging from forgotten rock B-sides and singles to demos, alternate takes, and unreleased songs that rival official releases. But Biograph is really remarkable for weaving these songs into a fabric that reveals the true trajectory of Dylan's career, offering as much to the curious as it does to the dedicated. That sets a standard for box sets that has rarely been matched, making Biograph all the more impressive in retrospect.

Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler - The Jokermen (3 CD, 2016/FLAC)

Totally unique collection of a lot of songs performed by Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler together. This collection is spanning from the early sessions for Slow train coming, the Infidels sessions, the concert in 1986 when Dylan joined Dire Straits to perform four of his own songs and also the concert a couple of days before that when Mark Knopfler joined Bob Dylan at a concert, backed by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Two B-sides from vinyl singles and some songs which are not too much different than the album versions but different mixes or some instrument fewer or something like that. The sound quality has been improved a lot because all songs have been remastered.

Bob Dylan - Complete Infidels Sessions with Mark Knopfler & Mick Taylor [7 CD, 2008]

Infidels is the 22nd studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on October 27, 1983 by Columbia Records.

Produced by Mark Knopfler and Dylan himself, Infidels is seen as his return to secular music, following a conversion to Christianity, three evangelical, gospel records and a subsequent return to a less religious lifestyle. Though he has never entirely abandoned religious imagery, Infidels gained much attention for its focus on more personal themes of love and loss, in addition to commentary on the environment and geopolitics.

VA - Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International [4 CD, 2012/FLAC]

Chimes of Freedom: Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International is a charity compilation album featuring new recordings of compositions by Bob Dylan by multiple artists, released on January 24, 2012. Proceeds from the album will be donated to the human rights organization Amnesty International.

Chimes of Freedom features a stellar and diverse group of artists across the generational and musical spectrum. The performers, including many of Amnesty International's longtime supporters, range in age from Miley Cyrus, 19, to folk music legend Pete Seeger, who, at 92, records Dylan's poignant "Forever Young," with a children's chorus.

The diversity of the musicians and musical genres - from rock, rap, hip-hop to pop, folk, country, jazz and blues - attests to Amnesty's depth of support in the music community, the universal appeal of the core message of human rights, and the breadth of Dylan's impact on culture. Almost every track on the album is being released for sale for the first time - except for the title song, Dylan's original 1964 recording of "Chimes of Freedom."

VA - The Many Faces Of Bob Dylan (3 CD, 2016/FLAC)

Before the world knew Bob Dylan, songs were inevitably about a boy-girl relationship or about dancing. Due to his folk background, Bob Dylan songs had a poetic and existential lyric content which after him was incorporated into rock culture. That's how we can find among Dylan fans legendary artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jack White and even Guns N'Roses, who achieved great success with their own version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door. In the Many Faces of Bob Dylan we present: in the first two CDs, 28 new versions by the artist, a real treasure that now is available to his fans. In addition, CD 3 is dedicated to the Greenwich Village scene that gave birth to his career, with artists like Joan Baez and Dave Van Ronk. The Many Faces Of Bob Dylan is an essential album both for his countless fans and for anyone interested in the evolution of popular music for the last 50 years.

Bob Dylan - Genuine Live '66 [8 CD, 2000/FLAC+320]

Scorpio put out the 8 CD set entitled Genuine Live 66 in 2000. It apparently contains "crystal clear line recordings" from many of the dates of the 1966 Dylan/Hawks UK tour. Much of this was previously unavailable or available only as poor audience recordings. Complete sets are still not present for some of the dates, from this it appears that recordings were not always complete.
