Neil Young - Transmission Impossible (3 CD, 2018) [FLAC]

This 3 disc box set features rare broadcast recordings by Neil Young, originally transmitted from live shows the great man performed in the 1970s and 1980s .

Disc One includes two such superb performances : the first a short set Neil played alongside Bob Dylan and members of The Band at the San Francisco SNACK Benefit concert in 1975, and secondly his legendary acoustic set from the late show he gave at Boston's Music Hall in November 1976.

Disc Two features Young's marvellous appearance on the Austin City Limits programme in 1984. Including recent cuts mixed with NY classics, this is perhaps Neil's finest performances of that period.

Disc Three houses another '80s gig, played at the end of the decade in Hamburg, Germany, on 8th December 1989, shortly after the release of his dynamic Freedom album.

Santana - Transmission Impossible (3 CD, 2016) [FLAC + 320]

This 3 CD collection features a number of live appearances made by Santana at various junctures across their lengthy career, all of which were the subject of FM radio broadcasts at the time of the shows in question, and which make plain what a timeless, artful and graceful group of master musicians this collective have always been. Kicking off with a delightful performance the band gave at the Berkeley Community Theater, on 6th February 1970, six months after their stunning appearance at Woodstock in August 69, which bought Santana worldwide attention.

Tom Petty - An American Treasure (4 CD Deluxe, 2018) [Hi-Res FLAC]

An American Treasure, the first posthumous Tom Petty project, is designed as an aural biography of the late rocker, telling a tale that begins with a Mudcrutch session from 1974, running through the glory of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in 1976, and concluding with a live version of “Hungry No More” from 2016, just over a year prior to his tragic 2017 passing. Arriving roughly a year after Petty’s death, the timing for An American Treasure makes sense — he certainly deserved a tribute — but in strict discographical terms, there didn’t seem a need for a second career-spanning box set, as he already had 1995’s rarity-laden box Playback and a multi-disc The Live Anthology from 2009. Happily, An American Treasure offers a story that’s not told on either previous set, and that’s a complete picture of Petty’s career, told entirely through byways, not highways. The compilers — a team consisting of his widow Dana, wife Adria, bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, plus longtime producer Ryan Ulyate — made a conscious decision not to replicate any material from Playback, which meant that there wasn’t room for the original hit versions of any of Petty’s hits. Ultimately, this meant that many of his best-known songs are nowhere to be found on An American Treasure, but that winds up as a feature, not a bug.
