UK four CD box set from the influential British Rock band led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Bill Nelson. This release contains the five studio albums Be Bop Deluxe recorded for Harvest Records '74-'78 (Axe Victim, Futurama, Sunburst Finish, Modern Music and Drastic Plastic) plus bonus material including the 1977 single 'Japan' and a handful of single edits. Also includes a whole disc of previously unreleased rarities, demos and live tracks.

On September 1, 1990, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, the Jerry Garcia band performed a particularly poignant kind of magic. A Grateful Dead show was originally scheduled for that date but was cancelled due to the untimely death of the Dead's brilliant, passionate keyboard player, Brent Mydland, in late July. Rather than cancel the gig, the Jerry Garcia Band stepped in to deliver one of their most heartfelt performances."

Captain Beefheart - Transmission Impossible [3 CD, 2015, FLAC]

 

Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range, Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. The group drew attention with their cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy", which became a regional hit. It was followed by their acclaimed debut album Safe as Milk, released in 1967 on Buddah Records. The first disc in this set concentrates on this period of Beefheart s career, featuring a radio broadcast of a live performance at The Avalon Ballroom in 1966, and a number of other tracks from various radio sessions from 1967 and 1968. By 1974, six albums in and frustrated by a lack of commercial success, Beefheart released two records of more conventional rock music that at the time were critically panned. This move, combined with not having been paid for a European tour and enduring Beefheart's less than benevolent behavior towards them, led the entire band to quit. Beefheart eventually formed a new Magic Band with a group of younger musicians. The second disc of this collection comes from this era and features a solid performance by a group who have at times been unfairly dubbed The Tragic Band ; but as this broadcast attests, they were actually a solid unit of master musicians playing some quite extraordinary rock music - albeit music less challenging than Beefheart s previous fare. Fast forward to 1980 and Beefheart has his original fan-base back intact, following his critically acclaimed Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) and Doc at the Radar Station albums - and is out on the road promoting the latter. Stopping off in January 81 at Vancouver s Commodore Ballroom, for a performance that again is the subject of an FM radio broadcast, this show from his late resurgence forms the basis of the third disc in this collection. Beefheart would completely retire from music a year later to concentrate on his work in the areas of art and sculpture - ironically a venture which proved to be his most financially secure. His expressionist paintings and drawings command high prices, and have been exhibited in art galleries and museums across the world. Captain Beefheart died in 2010, having suffered from multiple sclerosis for many years.

Swans discography 1983-2019

Swans is an American experimental rock band formed in 1982 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. One of the few acts to emerge from the New York City-based no wave scene and stay intact into the next decade, Swans have become recognized for an ever-changing sound, exploring genres such as noise rock, post-punk, industrial and post-rock. Initially, their music was known for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. Following the addition of singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jarboe in 1986, Swans began to incorporate melody and intricacy into their music. Jarboe remained the band's only constant member except Gira and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg until their dissolution in 1997.

In 2010, Gira re-formed the band without Jarboe, establishing a stable lineup of musicians which has toured worldwide and released four albums to critical acclaim. This iteration of the group performed its last shows in November 2017, ending the tour in support of its final album The Glowing Man. Since 2019, Gira has been touring and recording with Swans as "a revolving cast of contributors". The band's latest album, Leaving Meaning, was released on October 25, 2019. Since 1990, all Swans records have been released through Gira's own label, Young God Records.

Be Bop Deluxe at the BBC is a 3CD+DVD set that features the work of the English prog rock band while at the Beeb.

In total, 39 tracks across the three audio discs take in numerous John Peel sessions and ‘BBC In Concert’ performances, while the DVD includes many Old Grey Whistle Test appearances and footage of numbers played on the ‘Sight and Sound in Concert’ TV programme.
