Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood – Juice (2014) [FLAC]
Over two decades, keyboardist John Medeski, percussionist Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood‘s
abiding fascination with the endless possibilities of groove-based
music has taken them from intimate jazz clubs to outdoor festival
stages. Their eclectic efforts have included a number of high-profile
collaborations; the most prolific and successful has been with esteemed
guitarist John Scofield. Following the concert performances
issued as In Case the World Changes Its Mind (2011), Juice is their
fourth album together since 1998’s pace setting A Go Go (Verve).
Peetie Wheatstraw (William Bunch) - Complete Recorded Works (7 CD, 1995)
William Bunch (December 21, 1902 – December 21, 1941), known as Peetie Wheatstraw, was an American musician, an influential figure among 1930s blues singers. The only known photograph of him shows him holding a National brand tricone resonator guitar, but he played the piano on most of his recordings.
Peetie Wheatstraw was the name adopted by singer William Bunch, taking it from Black American folklore. According to author Ralph Ellison, who made use of the Wheatstraw legend to model characters in his novels Invisible Man and Juneteenth, "Peetie Wheatstraw" was the evil half of a twin personality whose challenge was invoked at the start of a pool game. He was "the Devil's Son-In-Law" or "the High Sheriff of Hell," in search of his other half, the "Lord God Stingerroy" to shoot him a game. Nothing is known of the early life of William Bunch, other than that he was born in Ripley, Tennessee and raised in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. In 1929, he arrived in East St. Louis, already using the name Peetie Wheatstraw. Allegedly, as Wheatstraw, Bunch was also spreading the rumor that he had been to the "crossroads" and had sold his soul to the Prince of Darkness in exchange for success as a musician.

Randy Newman - Guilty : 30 Years of Randy Newman [4 CD, 1998] [FLAC]
Guilty: 30 Years of Randy Newman is a box set released in November 1998 that chronicles the first three decades of singer songwriter Randy Newman's musical career.
This four-disc set fulfills two functions: on its first two discs, it provides the perfect guide for those uninitiated to Newman's world. The third disc of previously unreleased tracks and the fourth, containing selections from Newman's film scores, are aimed at the Newman completist. In both cases it works well. The songs on the first two discs are well chosen, perfectly illuminating the irony-drenched, cynical, but often humorous (however darkly) approach Newman always took to songwriting. On "Political Science" he mocks diplomatic relations, and on the beautiful, downcast "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" he quietly bemoans the state of humanity over a breathtaking melody.
Listeners will be reminded that Newman shone as a melodist, belonging in the first rank of American composers alongside Gershwin and Stephen Foster. The rarities disc (which features both demo versions of familiar songs and tunes never heard on a Newman album in any form) will be the real draw for those who know and love Newman, and will further illuminate his legacy for those coming to this unparalleled artist's work for the first time.
