How did a Wisconsin chair company, producing records on the cheap and run by men with little knowledge of their audience or the music business, build one of the greatest musical rosters ever assembled under one roof? The answer lies in ‘The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records 1917-1932,’ this epic, two-volume omnibus of art, words and music housed in a limited-edition, hand-sculpted cabinet-of-wonder, to be jointly released by Jack White’s Third Man Records and John Fahey’s Revenant Records.
Paramount Records was founded on a modest proposition: produce records as cheaply as possible, recording whatever talent was available. Over its lifetime, the label would become a “race records” powerhouse, its sound and fortunes directly linked to the Great Migration.
By the time Paramount ceased operations in 1932, it had compiled a dizzying array of performers still unrivaled to this day, spanning early jazz titans (Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller), blues masters (Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Skip James), American divas (Ma Rainey, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters), gospel (Norfolk Jubilee Quartette), vaudeville (Papa Charlie Jackson), and the indefinable “other” (Geeshie Wiley, Elvie Thomas). Paramount would also directly influence the style of Robert Crumb and countless other 20th century artists and illustrators, through a series of hand-drawn ads promoting its releases in the pages of the Chicago Defender.
Klaus Schulze & Pete Namlook - Dark Side of the Moog [12 volumes, 1994-2008]
Klaus Schulze (born 4 August 1947) is a German electronic music pioneer, composer and musician. He also used the alias Richard Wahnfried. He was briefly a member of the Krautrock bands Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and The Cosmic Jokers before launching a solo career consisting of more than 60 albums released across five decades.
The Dark Side of the Moog is a Klaus Schulze collaboration with Pete Namlook (joined also by Bill Laswell on volumes 4 to 7). Each title is a distortion of Pink Floyd song and album titles.
Over The Hill - Ratbite Fever [1974]
These three joined Magic Muscle in January 1973, to perform "heavy" music, as an alternative to making no progress, but left in July 1973 to reform Over The Hill as a four-piece, including Peter Roe. This line up rehearsed until Christmas 1973, and played its first gig in Cambridge during January 1974. Drummer Nick Howell left the band in March, and was replaced by Alan Platt.
The Grateful Dead's Robert Hunter worked with the band in 1974, when creating his "Rum Runners" songs, and is actually singing on "Ratbite Fever" (The title track). In 1974, the band produced a complete LP, but it has taken 16 years for real music-lovers to get the opportunity to hear it. SPM is delighted to present on this CD, the complete studio sessions, plus several live tracks, from the fabulous Over The Hill.

By the time they released their fifth album BROTHERS AND SISTERS in August 1973, The Allman Brothers Band had experienced dizzying highs and soul-crushing lows. The group had spent its first two years developing its formidable collective chemistry into an unprecedented stylistic fusion that established it as the era's most influential American rock act. But just as the band had achieved a hard-won commercial breakthrough with 1971's At Fillmore East, it suffered a devastating loss with the death of Duane Allman, its founder, leader and musical visionary, in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 1971.
