Robert Randolph & the Family Band discography [2002-2019]

Robert Randolph & The Family Band is a multicultural American funk and soul band led by pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph.

Robert Randolph jumped from spiritual to secular music and found an audience among blues fans, roots rock aficionados, and jam band followers with his fiery, passionate instrumental work and heartfelt music. Randolph started playing the instrument as a churchgoing teenager in Orange, New Jersey, a small city just outside of Newark. He regularly attended the House of God Church, an African-American Pentecostal denomination that had been including steel guitars (or "Sacred Steel") in services since the '30s, with the pedal steel in particular being introduced during the '70s. Randolph learned to play by watching other steel players during church services; years later, he updated that sacred basis with a secular mix of funk and soul, giving a new multicultural facelift to an instrument that had often been associated with country music.

Grateful Dead - Formerly The Warlocks 1989 (6 CD, 2010/FLAC)

Formerly the Warlocks is a live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. It contains two complete concerts on six CDs. It was recorded on October 8 and 9, 1989, at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. It was released on September 7, 2010.

For the 1989 Hampton Coliseum shows, the band wanted to maintain a low profile, so the venue was not included as part of the regular ticket sale for the East Coast fall tour. Instead, tickets went on sale at local outlets ten days before the concerts, with the band billed as "Formerly the Warlocks" instead of the Grateful Dead. When the band came to town, the marquee of the Coliseum read "The Warlocks", which had been the Grateful Dead's original name for a few months in 1965.

The Allman Brothers Band - Bear's Sonic Journals Live at Fillmore East, February 1970 [Deluxe Edition] (3 CD, 2021/FLAC)

Following the recent release of Down in Texas ’71, the Allman Brothers Band Recording Company has turned its attention to another archival release – in this case, a reissue of a past title.  On June 18, the label will team with The Owsley Stanley Foundation for a wide release of the 3-CD Deluxe Edition of Bear’s Sonic Journals: Fillmore East , February 1970.

This run of concerts from Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Jai Johanny Johanson a.k.a. Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks was recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley at Bill Graham’s late, lamented New York venue on February 11, 13, and 14, 1970.  Grateful Dead Records released a 7-track live compilation drawn from the shows in 1996.  (The Dead’s performances from those shows has also been released.)  Then, in 2018, the album was reissued and remastered on CD, and a limited edition 3-CD set was also issued.  The 3-CD iteration presented the already-released compilation CD along as the first disc, with the remaining two CDs offering the source material from all three nights: the complete set of Bear’s Sonic Journals from each show as played by the Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East on February 11, 13, and 14, 1970.

Grateful Dead - July 1978 : The Complete Recordings [2016]

July 1978: The Complete Recordings is a live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. Packaged as a box set, and produced as a limited edition of 15,000 copies, it contains five complete concerts on twelve CDs. It was released on May 13, 2016.

July 7, 1978 was the band's first appearance at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre (there were actually four dates in succession at the venue, with the band taking a seven week break halfway in between). They would go on to play annual runs at Red Rocks through 1987, missing only 1980, 1981, and 1986. An additional date was originally scheduled for Milwaukee Summerfest, on July 2, but had to be cancelled. Though relatively short, this is the third complete tour to be officially released by the band, following the twenty two-date tour of Western Europe in 1972, and the sixteen-date Winter/Spring 1990 tour of the eastern United States.

The concerts were recorded by audio engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson. They are among a number of soundboard recordings by Cantor-Jackson — known as "Betty boards" — that were long missing from the Grateful Dead's vault of concert recordings. The tapes eventually were returned to the band, and production of the album began some months later.

Aquarium Rescue Unit - In a Perfect World [1994/FLAC]

Founded as an outlet for the "out" musical philosophy of Col. Bruce Hampton, the Aquarium Rescue Unit's ever-rotating lineup became a fixture on the early jam band scene, eventually spawning members of the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Leftover Salmon, and Frogwings. While never commercially successful, the band's hilariously fun fusion of bluegrass, rock, Latin, jazz, and impeccable chops became a template for much future work in the genre.
