The Closing of Winterland is a four-CD live album by the Grateful Dead. It contains the complete concert performed on December 31, 1978. The concert was also released as a two-disc DVD. The title derives from the fact that it was the last concert in San Francisco's Winterland Arena, which was shut down shortly thereafter. The Dead celebrated the closing as an approximately five-hour-long party (complete with breakfast with the audience at dawn) and invited some guests including guitarist John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Ken Kesey as well as actor Dan Aykroyd who provided the midnight countdown. Grateful Dead - Aoxomoxoa (50th Ann. Edition, 2019) [24-192]

The two-CD deluxe edition features two mixes of the album – one being a “fully remastered” version from the original 1969 mix and the other remastered from the definitive 1971 band-produced mix. These are both on the first disc. The second CD features unreleased live music dating back to January 24-26, 1969.

Grateful Dead audiovisual archivist Dave Lemieux comments in the press release, “In 1969, for their third album, the Grateful Dead eschewed outside producers and created Aoxomoxoa themselves, beginning a run of self-produced albums that would continue until 1977. Scrapping the first sessions, which were recorded to eight-track tape, the Dead now had 16 tracks with which to experiment their psychedelic sound, with an album that included entirely Robert Hunter-penned lyrics for the first time.” The LP introduced such all-time favorites as “St. Stephen” and “China Cat Sunflower.”

Grateful Dead - Transmission Impossible - The Benefit Shows (3 CD, 2018/FLAC-HD)

Renowned for having regularly performed concerts that ran in excess of three hours, when the occasion demanded such -such as at all-star benefit gigs - Grateful Dead could still bring the house down when playing sets lasting between an hour and ninety minutes. This triple disc sets features three such occasions from the Dead's glorious catalogue of live broadcast recordings, which prove the above without exception.

Disc One is an early show for the band from November 19th 1966, recorded at Bill Graham s Fillmore, with the gig benefitting the venue itself, which was losing money at the time.

Disc Two features the groups set at the Cambodian Refugee Benefit on January 13th 1980, held at the Oakland Coliseum Arena, and again organised by Bill Graham, in support of those who d had to flee their homes following the 1979 invasion of Cambodia by Vietnam.

Disc Three which, somewhat ironically, features the Grateful Dead s appearance at the Bill Graham Tribute Concert held in Golden Gate Park, organised in the wake of the great man s tragic death, following a helicopter crash on October 25th 1991.

Go Ride The Music & West Pole (1969) [2x DVD5]

This 2-DVD package comes straight from the estate of Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975)and features the heart and soul of the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene. The films contain fantastic archival footage of bands such as Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Grateful Dead. Although much of the footage was aged, each segment was pieced together well and much of the original sound and color were preserved on the original film. This DVD set is definitely a must have for any Jefferson Airplane fan, as much of the first disc "Go Ride The Music" focuses on performances from Jefferson Airplane, with some laid-back Quicksilver Messenger Service thrown in for good measure.

"Go Ride The Music" and "West Pole" were initially aired on television as documentary specials, so each song is interspersed with commentary from host Ralph Gleason, where he interviews young people of the times outside many of the famous San Francisco hot spots for live music.
Both discs originally aired as one-hour television shows and were produced and hosted by Gleason in an effort to show that something was really happening here and most viewers didn’t know exactly what it was. “Go Ride The Music” features Jefferson Airplane performing at an intimate indoor venue and Quicksilver Messenger Service performing live in concert in the open air. There are also cameo appearances from David Crosby and Jerry Garcia. The second disc, “West Pole”, features a diverse range of acts including Grateful Dead, Steve Miller Band and others, including Ace of Cups, the first all-female electric rock band, in various settings, and takes a more analytical look of the music and the times.

Grateful Dead - Anthem to Beauty (DVD 5/1999)

Anthem to Beauty is a music documentary about the making of the Grateful Dead albums Anthem of the Sun and American Beauty. It originally aired in a somewhat shortened version in 1997 as part of the television series Classic Albums. It was released on VHS video tape in 1998 and on DVD in 1999, with a running time of 1 hour 15 minutes.

The video combines footage from the early years of the Grateful Dead with 1997 interviews of former band members and associates. Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, Robert Hunter, and David Grisman, among others, discuss the creation of 1968's experimental, psychedelic Anthem of the Sun and 1970's folk-rock classic American Beauty. They also listen to and analyze the original master recordings for the albums, and talk about being in (or working with) the Grateful Dead at that time. Recording engineer Stephen Barncard rolls the original master tape and solos tracks, recalling the recording sessions and highlighting specific moments.

Keyboardist Tom Constanten discusses the artificiality of appearing on Hugh Hefner's show Playboy After Dark. David Grisman plays his full version of the mandolin part for Ripple, as he had intended.
