Tom Petty - Transmission Impossible [3 CD, 2015] (FLAC + 320)

 

His first album hit the streets in 1976 and initially its arrival caused few heads to turn. Music fans were confused; were these a bunch of punks or 1960s revivalists with a liking for Gene Clark era Byrds? Fortunately, as is so often the case, the UK seemed to 'get it' pretty soon after the record s release there and it reached #24 on the British chart. News traveled West, and a full year after the home turf release Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers entered the Billboard chart. Shortly thereafter second album You're Gonna Get It! was released, and became a hit right away. The rest, as they say, is history. But it s relatively recent history about which any number of books, films and of course superlative albums are readily available for students of this remarkable performer to delve into.

Dave's Picks Volume 45 is a four-CD live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. It contains two complete concerts recorded on October 1 and 2, 1977 at the Paramount Theatre in Portland, Oregon. It was released on January 27, 2023, in a limited edition of 25,000 copies.

The album is one of many Grateful Dead live releases to feature performances from 1977, widely considered a peak year for the band. Material from the band's October 1977 shows was previously documented on Road Trips Volume 1 Number 2.

The Kinks - Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround, Part One [1970] (Limited Deluxe Edition 3 CD, 2020/FLAC)

“Lola” gave the Kinks an unexpected hit and its crisp, muscular sound, pitched halfway between acoustic folk and hard rock, provided a new style for the band. However, the song only hinted at what its accompanying album Lola Versus the Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One was all about.

Rush - Transmission Impossible (3 CD, 2017/FLAC)

Having formed in 1968, it was not until 1974 that the band proper with Neal Peart joining Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson to create the line-up that has remained in place ever since came to be. And just two weeks after Peart joined the group, Rush began their first US tour. On 26th August 74 the group played at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland , Ohio, a show recorded and broadcast by WMMS radio, which made it Rush s very first radio broadcast. It is this now legendary gig which forms the first disc of this set, alongside some bonus tracks which were recorded at the same venue a year later. The second disc here is home to an FM broadcast recorded at Holland s Pinkpop Festival in June 1979. Perfomed while the group were promoting their 1978 album Hemispheres, this rarely heard recording is included here on CD for the first time. The final disc in this collection featured the classic 1980 broadcast from the group, recorded at the Kiel Auditorium in St Louis, Missouri, on 13th February as part of their Permanent Waves Tour, and this recording remains arguably one of Rush s very finest live performances.

'Fragments—Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997)' shows how Dylan made his first late-career classic. 

Most editions of Bob Dylan’s three-decades-and-running Bootleg Series focus on a particular phase of his career, but a few have zoomed in on the making of an especially hallowed record. As its title makes clear, that’s the case with Fragments—Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997), the 17th volume in the series. Steve Miller Band - The Early Albums (1968-71) [6 CD/FLAC]

 

Originally called the Steve Miller Blues Band, the group first made its mark as a psychedelic blues rock band in San Francisco. They went through a fallow period commercially in the early seventies before coming back with the hit album The Joker and the song of the same name in late 1973, followed by the band's two most successful studio albums in 1976 and 1977, Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams. In 1978.

Children Of The Future is where it all started for Steve Miller. Originally released in 1968, this debut, chock full of unpredictable acid blues, is very different from the mainstream rock sounds of the '70s that brought Miller fame and fortune. Although few of these songs are ever featured on the radio or performed at Miller's concerts, Children Of The Future remains one of Miller's more interesting and challenging releases.

Ray Cooder - Boomer's Story (1972/2017) [FLAC-HD]

Boomer’s Story is the third studio album by American roots rock musician Ry Cooder, released in 1972.

The title track was previously recorded as “The Railroad Boomer” by Bud Billings (aka Frank Luther) and Carson Robison in a performance recorded at the studio at Liederkranz Hall in New York on September 9, 1929 (Victor V-40139). Although it is credited on Cooder’s album as “traditional,” Robison was awarded a copyright and the song “can’t be shown to have circulated in oral tradition.” Gene Autry recorded it in December of the same year. In the 1930s the song was recorded for Decca Records by the Rice Brothers’ Gang, in 1939 by Roy Acuff & His Smoky Mountain Boys, in 1941 by Riley Puckett for RCA, and in the 1950s by Cisco Houston (as “The Rambler”) and by The New Lost City Ramblers, who included Cooder’s guitar teacher, Tom Paley.

 

Yes - Yessongs (3 CD, 1973) [24-96]

 Yessongs is the first live album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released as a triple album in May 1973 on Atlantic Records. After completing their Close to the Edge Tour in April 1973, the band selected live recordings between February and December 1972 on their tours supporting Fragile (1971) and Close to the Edge (1972) for a live album release. They were then edited and remixed with their producer and live sound mixer Eddy Offord. Three tracks feature original Yes drummer Bill Bruford while the remaining tracks feature his replacement, Alan White.

Eric Clapton - E.C Was Here (1975/2014) [24-192]

Following Eric Clapton's recovery from heroin addition in 1974 and subsequent comeback (announced by 461 Ocean Boulevard), the guitar legend retained his fine band and toured extensively, and this live album is a souvenir of that period. Despite having such pop-oriented hits as "I Shot the Sheriff," E.C. Was Here makes it clear that Clapton was and always would be a blues man. The opening cut, "Have You Ever Loved a Woman," clearly illustrates this, and underlines the fact that Clapton had a firm grasp on his blues guitar ability, with some sterling, emotionally charged and sustained lines and riffs. A short version of "Drifting Blues" also drives the point home, with a lazy, Delta blues feel that is intoxicating. Aside from these standout blues workouts, Clapton provides a surprise with two songs from his Blind Faith period. "Presence of the Lord" and Steve Winwood's classic "Can't Find My Way Home" are given great readings here and highlight Clapton's fine touring band, particularly co-vocalist Yvonne Elliman, whose singing adds a mellifluousness to Clapton's blues vocal inflections. The market was a bit oversaturated with Clapton and Cream reissue products at the time, and this fine record got lost in the shuffle, but it remains an excellent document of the period.

 

Little Feat- Transmission Impossible [3 CD, 2015] (FLAC + 320)

 

With an influence as far reaching still as their musical eclecticism was during the band s golden era, Little Feat remain one of the very finest American groups of the 1970s. And while their classic LPs from that time remain essential, it was during their live shows that they transcended mere excellence and took proceedings to somewhere quite extraordinary, if not supernatural. This delightful triple disc set captures perfectly the mighty Feat doing exactly what they did best, when they were doing it best. Featuring three complete FM radio broadcast recordings from the years 1973, 1974 and 1975 respectively, during which the true nature of this legendary act, nay institution, is revealed in dynamic performance and magnificent audio quality, this collection will surely become a fixed asset in the collections of fans the world across. The first disc here includes the group s performance at the intimate Ebbets Field venue in Denver Colorado, recorded on 19th July 1973, just a few months after the release of Dixie Chicken, arguably Little Feat s most cherished album. Next up comes the 1974 in-studio recording they made for transmission at New York s Ultrasound Studios on 19th September that year, shortly after Feats Don t Fail Me Now came out, another favourite LP among those in the know. Finally, the set concludes with one of the most famous gigs they ever performed, the 1975 Halloween show from Boston s majestic Orpheum Theatre, a recording made a month before The Last Record Album was issued.

David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name (2 CD, 50th Anniversary , 2019) [FLAC-HD]

If I Could Only Remember My Name is the debut solo album by American singer-songwriter David Crosby, released in February 1971 on Atlantic Records. The guest musicians on the album included Graham Nash, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and members of Jefferson Airplane, Santana, and the Grateful Dead. The ensemble was given the informal moniker of The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra. It was one of four high-profile albums (all charting within the top fifteen) released by each member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping Déjà Vu album, along with After the Gold Rush (Neil Young, September 1970), Stephen Stills (Stephen Stills, November 1970) and Songs for Beginners (Graham Nash, May 1971). It peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and earned a RIAA gold record certification in the United States. 

On October 15, 2021, a 50th anniversary re-issue of the album was released with numerous out-takes and demos, as well as liner notes by Steve Silberman. 

 

Jerry Garcia & David Grisman discography 1991-2012

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman first met in the parking lot of a bluegrass festival in West Grove, Pennsylvania in 1964. They were both members of Old & In The Way in 1973 and performed together occasionally in other situations. They started performing and recording together in 1990 usually supported in concert by Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (violin, percussion). Subsequently they performed live occasionally but recorded many sessions at David Grisman's Dawg Studios. The majority of their releases are drawn from those studio sessions.

Jerry Garcia Band - Electric on the Eel [6 CD, 2019] [FLAC-HD]

On August 29, 1987 Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia led both the Jerry Garcia Band and the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band for performances at French’s Camp On The Eel River in Piercy, California. Garcia would bring the JGB back to the scenic venue on June 10, 1989 and on August 10, 1991 – now get ready for the spectacular Electric on the Eel set showcasing the Jerry Garcia Band’s electric sets from 8/29/1987, 6/10/1989, and 8/10/1991.

Electric On the Eel contains three full electric sets from the JGB’s visits to Eel River in 1987, 1989 and 1991.

Fall 1989: The Long Island Sound is a six-CD live album by the Jerry Garcia Band and by Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman. It was recorded on September 5 and 6, 1989, at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut and the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. It was released by ATO Records on December 17, 2013.

Fall 1989: The Long Island Sound contains two complete concerts. At each of these shows, Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman played a set of acoustic music, followed by two sets by the Jerry Garcia Band, a rock group led by Jerry Garcia. At the time, Weir and Garcia were the guitarists for the Grateful Dead. Each of the discs of the album corresponds to one of the sets from the concerts.

Lonnie McIntosh (July 18, 1941 – April 21, 2016), better known by his stage name Lonnie Mack, was an American rock, blues, and country singer-guitarist. As a featured artist, his recording career spanned the period from 1963 to 1990. He remained active as a performer into the early 2000s.

 

Journey - Transmission Impossible (3 CD, 2020) [FLAC + 320]

 This triple CD set contains a selection of live performances recorded for FM radio broadcast, captured during the early part of their career. 

Disc One features their show from The Riviera Theatre in Chicago on 1st May 1976, shortly after the release of their sophomore album Look Into The Future, when ex-Santana man Gregg Rolie undertook lead vocal duties. 

Disc Two includes a rare performance in the form of Journey s set for the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show on 1st October 1978. Recorded in the wake of their Infinity album, and featuring both Rolie and new vocalist Steve Perry, the group are joined by a selection of guest musicians from such bands as The Doobie Brothers, Tower Of Power and Stoneground, performing a selection of classic blues and Motown covers in addition to cuts from their own catalogue. 

Disc Three concludes this collection with a show given at The Lloyd Noble Center, Oklahoma on 21st July 1983. Now featuring Perry as full time front man, this recording is packed with some of Journey s best-loved songs, including the immortal Don t Stop Believin . 

Jeff Beck discography 1968-2022 [FLAC / FLAC-HD]

Geoffrey Arnold "Jeff" Beck (24 June 1944 – 10 January 2023)) was an English rock guitarist. One of three noted guitarists, with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, to have played with The Yardbirds, Beck also formed The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. He was ranked 14th in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", and the magazine has described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". MSNBC has called him a "guitarist's guitarist"

Much of Beck's recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues-rock, heavy metal, jazz fusion and most recently, an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Beck has earned wide critical praise; furthermore, he has received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance five times. Although he has had two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not established or maintained a broad following or the sustained commercial success of many of his collaborators and bandmates. Beck appears on albums by Mick Jagger, Kate Bush, Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Zucchero, Cyndi Lauper, Brian May and ZZ Top. He also made a cameo appearance in the movie Twins (1988).

He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of The Yardbirds (1992) and as a solo artist (2009). 

Big Band Of Brothers - A Jazz Celebration Of The Allman Brothers Band [2019/FLAC]

  

New West Records released Big Band of Brothers: A Jazz Celebration of the Allman Brothers Band. Released in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Allman Brothers Band’s debut album, the 10-song set of jazz interpretations of Allman Brothers Band favorites features Marc Broussard and Ruthie Foster on vocals on two songs each. Big Band of Brothers: A Jazz Celebration of the Allman Brothers Band also features Jack Pearson on guitar, who performed as a member of the Allman Brothers Band from 1997 to 1999. The celebrated trombonist Wycliffe Gordon of Jazz at Lincoln Center fame is featured as a soloist on “Don’t Want You No More,” and wrote the arrangement for “Statesboro Blues.” Gordon is consistently ranked among leading trombone players in the Downbeat critics poll and has topped the list at least five times. The 15-piece Big Band of Brothers was produced by Mark Lanter, Charles Driebe & John Harvey and was recorded & mixed by Eric Bates at Bates Brothers Recording in Hueytown, AL.
